New Edge Comp = more smoke????
Right after buying my '02 a year ago, I bought and installed a new Comp. Shortly after installing it, it would occasionally misbehave, and random lights lit instead of the "right" display - the only way to correct and restore normal operation, was to completely shut the truck down and restart it.
It got worse on my recent trip to my folks place up in Idaho, and acted up 4 times in 1200 miles - so I called Edge to report the problem and arrange for an exchange unit - no problem... While I had Aaron at Edge on the phone, I asked if there had been any programing revisions since I had bought mine, and he reported only "minor" tweaks...
BUT, after receiving and installing the replacement, I find I am getting what appears to be LOTS more smoke, even down on 3x3 where I normally run empty and around town. Haven't had the truck out on a longer drive, or pulled the trailer yet - so not sure what I'll see there, especially towing our RV up in a grade at 5x5 - Even with the first Comp, I was starting to slip the clutch in 6th gear down around 1700 rpm if I pushed it in a steep grade...
My latest Comp still is marked "rev.7", and is serial marked about 700 later than my original. I had always thought the older Comp was delivering somewhat lower power gains than what other users experience on dyno runs - so maybe the older one wasn't fueling as fully as it should, and the new one is?
Any others made a recent similar swapout with Edge, and had a similar observation?

Never had the LACK of smoke problem just the opposite.

Well, yeah, I sorta think the increased smoke is a GOOD thing - just not sure what the cause is - updated Comp programming (in spite of what Aaron said).
OR that the older unit WAS performing less than it should.
OR that the NEW unit is pushing MORE fuel than normal...
A few guys found it hard to believe that my EGT's were always relatively low for my setup - who knows, maybe it was because the first unit wasn't providing proper fueling...
You know how it is - I'm always the worrier... ;D ;D ;D
I'll hafta do another dyno run when the opportunity arises, and next time up a grade with the trailer MIGHT be real interesting...

I'd say the old unit had more problems than just flashing/flickering lights.

The display problem was just the sign of deeper problems inside.

Now you have a box that is doing what it is supposed to do.

phox

Mine did the same thing. Every other light would turn on and it would lock up. It would also surge on me after I'd run it real hard on 3x3. I haven't hooked the pump wire back up since I got a new one. I'm kinda curious as to how it acts.

Why is that? I would think that since it is hotter, the engine is hotter. And since the engine would be hotter, it would be burning more fuel than it normally would. Thus eliminating the smoke since more of the fuel is being burnt. Right?

Sorta tried it out empty on a short grade into town earlier today, and quickly saw 1100 degrees on 3x3 - boost at 32 PSI - like I said, next trip out with the fiver is likely to be REAL interesting! ;D ;D ;D

IF the original Comp WAS providing less than proper fuel flow and I was able to slip the clutch, what will happen now that the fuel supply is apparently higher - and what about my EGT's that were at the ragged edge BEFORE the new Comp... ;D ;D

Right?
[/quote]

No, hotter air will burn less fuel. Engine temp doesn't matter much (except maybe at cold startup) other than it's impact on intake air temperature. Hot air has lower density, and therefore less oxygen to burn with the fuel. Cooler air has more oxygen and will allow more fuel to burn during the combustion process.

That's one of the reasons why an air intake system like the Scotty will work so well - superior isolation from engine compartment air provides cooler air into the intake system.

At altitude, you become even more aware of this. When you live above 5K feet there is already lower air density and less oxygen, so you can tell a big difference in some engines between a hot day and a cool night. 8)
