New Clutch

Well, I guess it was gonna happen sooner or later... although I wish it would have happened later. My stocker clutch is slipping :'(. It just started today and it really only does it goin into 4th. I guess thats the price I pay for puttin them 370s in last week ;D.I was just lookin for some input on what everyone is running, you know ups and downs, prices, what not to get, that sort a thing. I plan on puttin a #10 plate in after the clutch, along with other fun stuff so Ill need somethin pretty stout that can withstand a lot of pullin too. Any input would be great.
Thanks
Wheels
Re:New Clutch

What are the differences in the Con O & Con Ofe? And are the differences worth the price difference?
Wheels

Re:New Clutch

well i just broke down and put in the con fe 13.25 conversion in mine. i was just going to use the con o in it, but with the 370s and a #10 plate you are at the limit of that. so i said the heck with it and blew the bucks hopefully just one time. it did slip pretty bad in the first 100 miles, but it seem to have broken it nice. and the clutch pressure is lighter than stock. i got mine her local for a good price.mike

Butter smooth, great holding force.

The OFE is intended for the 350 - 450HP range. Again, a nice, smooth clutch with a close to stock pedal feel. With your #10 and 370s, you're getting awful close to the power point where you'll need the OFE.

Rod

Re:New Clutch

I've got the 13" Con Fe conversion in my truck and it's awesome. Great holding power, light pedal pressure, and sweet Hole Shots. ;D The only down side to the clutch is you better learn to backup faster, cause it's a bit grabby for slow backing of trailers.

Give Peter at South Bend Clutch a call and he can feel you in on all the details. 8)

DB

Re:New Clutch

Sounds good, thanks for the advice guys. Another question I had was about install. I like to do everything by myself so I can learn more that way and I was wondering what special tools I will need to get the job done or is it even worth the trouble of doing it myself?
Thanks
Wheels

Re:New Clutch

you will need a way to spread the frame to get the cross member out. a porta power works well.

Re:New Clutch

DO NOT !!! use a porta power to remove the crossmember.
All you have to do is tap up on it and back [ both sides at the same time ] don't get it crooked.
If you use hyd. power you can spring the frame.
After you get it out you will see that it sits down on a boss on each side. Hence the reason to go up first.
Remove the rubber mount to give clearence to go up with it.

: Eddie : 8)

Re:New Clutch

I worked on the crossmember for 20-30 minutes when swapping out my clutch the 1st time (centerforce ). It takes a little finesse, but if you hit both sides evenly and up slightly, it will fall right out. Second time around, it probably took 1-2 minutes.

Re:New Clutch

I took mine to Piers and they put the dang thing in... I hate working on Trannys - especially big honkin ones...

BTW - CON OFE - A bit grabby, a little more pedal effort, and worth every penny!!

Re:New Clutch

After hearing all the dreaded thoughts of the SOB crossmember a buddy told me if you just hit it up and back it will come right out, and will go back in the same way.

He was right!

Buddy of mine that helped just hit up on it with a mini-sledge and it came right loose. going back in your just had to angle it right and tap it in to place. Not a single problem!
