Need some help picking a 255/85/16 tire

I've decided to get new tires since the OEM tires are pretty much useless when it comes to anything related to being off the asphalt. Decided to go for the 255/85 which is about 2" taller (hope this will be a noticable difference on the highway since I have a 4.10, 5spd and doing 75 mph it feels like the RPMs are way to high).
So, the tires. There are only a few choices out there. I want an All Terrain (or better) that gets good mileage wear at a fair price. Currently, leading toward the Dunlop RV tire. Any thoughts, recommendations???

Well I've got the following tires:

first set- Kelly Safari - PIA when wet. Long wear.
sec. set- Mastercraft courser OTD - PIA when wet, PIA when hot. Short wear
3rd set- Firestone wilderness AT - Nice wear, decent when wet, PIA in snow. Quite OK offroad.
4th set: BFG Mud-Terrain TA- Nice wear, silent ( for this kind of tire) good when wet, good offroad, medium in snow.

All of them 255/85R16 stock steel rims.

HTH
AlpineRAM
This is the tire size I run....

First set where Big O ATs. They had poor traction and only lasted 25K. >

Then Kellys Safari tire which is the builders of the Big Os. These didn't impress me at all they where slightly cheaper than the Big Os. I took then off at 20K because the traction up my Driveway (dirt road)

I now am running Dunlops ATs on Mickey Thomsons Classics for summer and BFG Mud TA KMs on my stock rims for hunting and the winter.

The Dunlops are a big improvement of the Big O and Kellys. I have only had them for 10K right now but they seem to be taking my HP better and I think they give me alot better life. Traction is OK they don't slip going up my drive way.

The BFG MT KM have been siped on the inside ribs only and are flat GREAT ;D They do great in the Snow and and super off road. They seem to be softer compound and if I were to run them all the time they wouldn't last.

I just put a set of Hercules Terra Trac A/T on my truck. I don't have any miles on them to speak of but I can tell you this, they work GREAT off-road and in the rain. Don't know about snow yet but I am sure they will be fine. They fit the stock wheels and I have about an inch between the tires in the rear(dually). They are about 3" taller than my stock tires (215/85/16). The only downside is they are only a D rated tire so the weight capabilities aren't the same as an E. Still it is better than the E rated 215's though.

REMINGTON WIDE BRUTE........ MADE BY DUNLOP, BUT A LITTLE CHEAPER AND HAVE SAME TREAD PATTERN AS DUNLOP AT'S. GREAT OFFROAD AND ONROAD. WORKS WELL IN SNOW AND WET ROADS, BUTHAVE A STICKY COMPOUND SO THEY WONT LAST AS LONG AS A HIGHWAY DESIGNED TIRE, BUT IMO THEY'RE GREAT TIRES AND CHEAPER THAN SOME OF THE MORE POPULAR ONES. DISCOUNT AND AMERICAS TIRE CO. HAS THEM FOR THE LOWEST PRICE.

The only problem with the Firestone Wilderness A/T tire is it's an 8-ply tire. I have a 3500 and wont run anything but 10-plys. The will wear better than 8-ply tires on trucks the size are. I work for Firestone by the way. I have Steeltex R4S 10 plys on my truck.
Chuck

I just got Cooper Discover A/t 235/85 R16. E- rated for my dually, and the best looking tread I could find to prepare for plowing.

Re:Need some help picking a 255/85/16 tire

I Was a commercial tire man for some time and I can tell you that the tire that we sold and people and industry liked here in the northwest for all around best compromise was the Remington Mud Brute with siped center lugs. It performed well in almost any condition. The tire is designed for extreme traction and delivers. The siping took a good traction tire and transformed it into a good ice and snow tire. The come in a 10 ply rating and I seem to remember guys consistently getting 45,000 to 60,000 miles out of them depending on their application.

I run the BFG Mud terrains and they work great. They wear pretty well and give the truck and nice little hum. Plus, great traction
