Need options for POSI please

My Dodge just has an open diff in the rear, I am wanting to get a posi unit for the rear. I read about the new detriot locker that is 100% both wheels and will still turn ok, I want drive from both rear wheels (donuts ) but still be able to go around corners without hopping. I do once in a while tow our pulling tractor around, which is a heavy load, so I need something that will work with that. Cheapest possible. Is the new detroit locker a good choice?

How good is that Detroit Electrac? That sounds like it sonething I would want, flip a switch for full posi.

Im sick of having to have the truck in 4WD on a hard launch also

Detroit or "locker" is just that - it locks. The only relief it has from snaping are ratchets. Now a choice to consider is the limited slip or as DC calls it "Sure-Grip" Versus a locker "Traction Lok". Anyway, the LS will serve you well in your launch efforts and when under load will give the slip you are looking for when turning corners. MHO - Oh, by the way just noticed you, like I, have an auto so we only have the D70 out back - best bet is to see if we can locate a D80 from a stick truck that's been front end or side hit that's an LS with matching ratio (yep, needle in the haystack and just like the needle when you find it, it's gonna hurt$) - I've been told the 70s aren't as tough under the abuse we (big sticks, fueling boxes, big turbos, nitros, high torque bla bla - hard launches) motor heads put them through.

What about the detroit electrac locker?

A guy I work with at out dodge dealer said that the 2500 and 3500 dont come with a limited slip, but come with a different type of posi. only the 1500 comes with a limited slip cause the LS isnt heavy duty enough for the heave trucks. My friends 01 cummins will break both rear tires, what is the factory posi unit that comes with some of these trucks?

I'm not sure who this guy is you work with but I guess he isn't very knowledgeable of what is factory equipped in 2nd gen CTD's. Both the Dana 70 and 80 could have been ordered from DC with an LSD....it could have been either the Trak Lok or Powr Lok which are both OEM Dana limited slip differentials. The Plok is superior by far compared to the Tlok since it has variable clutch loading that is proportional to the amount of torque it has to transmit. The inferior Tlok relies on a set amount of clutch preload and as a result, will not operate as smoothly, have as much holding power (won't transmit as much torque) and will not last anywhere near as long.

The Electrac is an awesome unit and has the added bonus of operating as a True Trac LSD when it is in the unlocked position....however, it really isn't needed for street use to have a fully manually locked spool which is what you have in the locked position - and it is much more expensive.

I have owned several Ploks in different trucks and they all worked flawlessly - save the lockers for hard offroading.

Where is the best place to get a plok unit? I would like to keep it under the $300 mark if possible, nothing on ebay.

Randy's, Reider Racing and any of the other big axle parts vendors will have them.....there is no chance of finding a Plok for $300 unless you can score a used unit.

Is this any good? Says it ratches on turning and fits open carrier, dont know if its the right spline though. Let me know if you guys have had experience with them.

That is an automatic locker and not an LSD. It is the right spline count as your D70 since it should be 32 spline. I am personally not a fan of the Lockrite in very high torque applications.....it tends to be very hard on the carrier where the cross pins come through - I have actually seen carriers crack there. IMO, I wouldn't want ANY auto locker for street use when I could have a smooth and sealess Plok instead. There isn't a substitute for lockers offroad, and I wouldn't have anything else in my Jeep but the Plok just works too good to justify putting up with a locker on the street.
