Need just a bit more power?

I have in California a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 SLT 24V CTD Quad Cab Automatic 3:55 gears. (5.9 diesel)
The truck just now has 100,000 miles I use it to pull a 5th wheel 4 months of the year and my daughter uses it as a family car the other 8 months. The new 5th wheel causes lots of down shifting (in and out of OD ) when in head winds or on slight grades ( I am within weight limits). I would like to add something to gain a bit more power when I use it and to retain the great fuel mileage while my daughter uses it in other words the best of both worlds.
any sugestions?

EZ - a great towing mod. It adds power/torque in the midrange, right where it's needed for towing. If you don't have gauges and aren't planning to add them, turnbuckle the turbo's wastegate (you still have the HY35-9-W turbo, right) to keep the EGTs down - the EZ has a built-in boost fooler.

Might as well throw some injectors in while you're at it. Nothing crazy, just a little more power. I picked up about .5 mpg with my DDII's. You might want to go with a Mad ECM instead of the Edge EZ.

I'm a 6-speed guy, but isn't an EZ plus DD2's likely to overstress the 47RE? This combo (see signature) took out my stock clutch!

Towing, oooohhhhhh yah, even none towing will kill the stock 47RE with that combo and a heavy foot.

Just an EZ has, very occasionally, caused slippage to a 47RE that is less than 100%!

Van aakens is a nice towing box . i wouldnt even try to run a box and injectors in a stock auto truck you will kill the tranny even if you arent pulling . As far as the MAD ECM i have heard that these will eat a stock tranny cause the fuel so much earlier than the stock ecm or even any of the fueling boxes. I hope you have at least a fuel pressure gauge in this truck . By the way its highly not suggjested to try to pull a 5th wheel in these trucks in OD with a stock tranny might want to think about a tranny upgrade . just a few thoughts

Ok You guys have scared the H**L out of me.
I guess the 47RE is the stock transmission ? I was just wondering if something simple like a Banks ( or other) Exhaust would work ( Just seen them advertized in the Good Sam Highways Mag.). If a EZ (I guess would be a a new computer chip ?) would work where would I get more information on it. What about the one I see in the Banks add that has an adjustment dial that says you can change settings as you go?
So what is the extra gages for? As you can see I am a novice at this "power up"
procedure Please try to talk in simpelton for me.
Seabee I read the book that says don't pull in OD but it just don't work. Just try towing to New York and back out of OD at twice the RPM's.
bluebull My daughter just got her 20 year award as a UPS driver and she drives the truck better than I do and I am a retired Teamster.
Aloha from Kauai and many thanks for everyones help.

There a couple of edge EZ's for sale in the classifieds on this site. An EZ will be fine for your tranny. You can find a much cheaper exhaust than banks.

The gauges are there to monitor your engine and it's vital signs. EGT (exhaust gas temperature) is crucial in making sure your engine won't melt itself. Not to big of a deal on a stock truck. Fuel pressure is very important because it lets you know if your pump is putting out sufficient pressure to keep the VP44 injection pump happy. Transmission temperature is important to make sure your not frying your tranny when towing. Boost is not as important but it does let you know if your engine is performing at it's peak and to see if you have any boost leaks.

Big Blue covered most of your questions.

Most members here that have tried Banks items feel they are too expensive for what you get. Or better said...You can get the same for less money elsewhere. I have no personal expirience with banks.

Yes, the 47RE is the stock tranny on the 24 valve CTD (Cummins Turbo Diesel).

The Edge EZ is an easy to install box (chip), designed for towing originally, adding 40-50 hp to an automatic truck while working within the electronic parameters of your trucks computer...as opposed to overriding it, like higher HP boxes. Should not be feared....works well with stock trannies 99 out of 100 times. The other 1%, I feel, have problems due to playing "street racer" too often, or towing VERY heavy.

The caution expressed here has to due with stock Dodge trannys having varying degrees of quality. If, at 100,000 miles, you have had no problems, and maintain it well, you would appear to have a good one!

Info on Edge products is here....

Good Luck

I have pretty much a stock tranny with about 70,000 miles, put a shift kit in around 8,000 miles ago. Before the shift kit I ran an EZ for about 25,000 miles, I now run an EZ with RV275 injectors. Nothing has changed since. Trans still shifts great, but I don't hotrod the truck 24/7 either. I always try to roll into the coal, never slaming the pedal to the floor, once rpms are up, all bets are off. I don't pull heavy either, which would most likely shorten the life of the 47re. If you're smart and pay attention to how you drive the truck a stock tranny will hold some mild power. Bomb away!

Thanks all
I feel a bit better now that I know my Transmission will not be sent directly to H**l if I try to add some power.
The one question I still have ( then I will shut up and listen) is does EZ or any other good brand make a in cab adjustible module? Is this a bad idea?
Price while important is not a big thing with me, I got $ 65 thou in these toys
(the truck and the 5th wheel ) and a couple $100 one way or the other is no big thing. What I am after is a reliable, not having to screw around with system I can jump into in California an head to New York.
Also I don't know the rules but could someone steer me toward places to look for " the other exhaust systems, places that sell the gages and brackets I need.
Aloha and thanks for putting up with my ignorance on the subject.
