I personally think 285-75-16 are the best. The 305s are a bit too wide, they throw a lot of mud up on the hood and doors because they stick out beyond the fender line. The 285s are the same diameter, just a bit more narrow.

the 305's are also harder on your steering system especialy you track bar.
also i found E range tires in 255/85r19 from toyo but there 260 EA, way too much for my dually thats 1800 in tires.

Nitto Terra Grapplers are D rated. Im liking the 295's except for a slight rub at full lock, but thats because im running 3rd gen wheels. A little spacer should clear that right up.

I have yet to find a 255 in a load E, but the load D is rated at only 100 lbs less (+/-) IIRC. The D range is still rated at over 3000 lbs per tire, so the rating difference is pretty slight. 96FLAT, remember that when talking about the metric tire sizes, that the first number (255,265,285, etc) is the WIDTH of the tire, not the height. The second number (75,85,95 etc) is the ASPECT RATIO, this represents the height of the tire relating to the width. A 255/85R16 simply put is, 255 cm tall, and the side wall height is 85% of the tread width. So, when you start looking at tires that are numerically similar but different rim sizes, the tires are not the same size. As opposed to the standard old way of sizing tires, in metric applications, the rim size is part of the equation that makes up the overall tire height. I personally will be switching over to 19.5" rims and running a medium duty tire on my truck as I think they look better and have been proven to last substantially longer under our heavy trucks.

I'm in the market for new tires myself, so this thread is very timely! I am currently running 265 75 16s on stock steel wheels, and am thinking of going to 285 75 16 most likely on the same stock rims. I'm thinking of going with Hi Tech retreads to save some serious $$ but I don't want to be penny wise and pound foolish. I've done some reading about the retreads and they now have a BFG AT clone as well as the Goodyear MTR tread clone in that size. Anyone have any direct experience with these tires?

thanks

I'm running 285/75/R16 Procomp D load tires and I like them. They are a soft tire so they stick to the road like glue and give a soft and quiet ride, the only downfall is that they do wear out in about 15000-20000 miles, even when rotated. They have a 50000 mile warranty on them, so if you buy them through 4wheelparts they will prorate you back the miles you didn't get to a new set.

i run the DUELER AT REVO'S i put 70,000 miles on them and they wore flat all the way accross, flat as a board!!! and i was still driving them even though u couldn't see the wear bars!! BEST TIRE I EVER OWNED!!! and i pulled my 45' fully enclosed trailer fully loaded combined wieght of 20,000-25,000 pounds all the time with no problems. this is the only tire that will ever go on my truck!!

Guys we just discused this a month ago! D rated tire with a higher load range is not the same as a E rated tire with less load range.
The E is a stronger tire period! The E also has a much stiffer sidewall than a D rated tire. D rated tire will not pass a state safety inspection if E rated is required!!!
