Need to do something about my turbo soon

Can anyone recommend the best place to get a rebuild kit for my turbo(hx-35)? At the moment I'm trying to decide between rebuilding it myself, or going with one of PDR's modified hx-35's. Are there any other stock style turbos out there that work a little better than stock and are fairly cheap? I don't have the money right now to go with an aftermarket turbo big enough to support my eventual power goals, nore do I have the money to do the fueling mods to support one. So, unfortunately, I'm gonna be stuck having to buy a bigger turbo somewhere down the road. If everything works out ok in the next month or so, I might have the money to get a fueling box (looking at that new Quadzilla race box with Commander once thats out) so maybe I could go with something slightly larger than stock, but again, it'll have to be on the cheap side.

found a rebuild kit from CityDiesel. Does that have everything in it that I would need to rebuild my turbo? and is it a quality kit? http://www.citydiesel.net/turbo-repa...cPath=22_27_51
I'm open to any other suggestions

How many miles on your turbo? Why do you think you need a rebuild? Fill in your signature so others can more easily help and make suggestions. Click on "User CP" on top left part of page then fill in the signature line.

i did a yahoo yellow pages search for your area (Schaefferstown, PA and used keyword 'diesel') and came up with quite a few shops that probably sell or could get a hold of the exact same kit. just a thought as its closer and they might help you out with the work if something goes wrong.

id say spend the $90 or so on the rebuild kit, then save up for more fuel and turbo.

whys it need a rebuild?

I've only got 79,500miles on the truck, but the turbo is on its way out. Its got a ton of up and down play in the shaft, almost to the point of touching the housing, and its now starting to get some in and out play, and a film of oil in the compressor housing as well. My guess is that who ever had it before me didn't believe in letting the turbo cool down before shutting it off. I'd kinda like to get this taken care of before it goes out and I wind up having to clean pieces out of my intercooler too. I'd ultimately like to wind up around 550hp someday, but I realize that any turbo I can afford right now wont support that. I'm just looking to rebuild my turbo or get a hybrid of somesort to get me by till I have the money to do more mods to the truck. Heaviest I tow is a couple snowmobiles in the winter and a pop-up in the summer.

How hard is it to rebuild my stock turbo? Are any special tools involved? Any special procedure I should know about?

tool Wise only basic hand tools is required . however the balancing is critical of the rotating parts, and if you had the equipment to do it rite, you would be it the turbocharger business. my advice is not to do it in the garage, but send it to the pros. a common misconception is that a whining turbo is cool. the reality of it is the whine is caused by imbalance which will kill the turbo

I was just looking to get buy for another year or 2 until I could afford a bigger aftermarket turbo and the fueling items to help support it. I thought that as long as my wheels weren't hitting the housing, I wouldn't have to worry about it being out of balance. If what you say is true, then maybe I'll just go with one of PDR's 35 turbo's. Sounds a little better than a stocker, and the price ain't to bad.

I would go with the PDR 35. They are reasonable and also happen to be one half of the towing twin set up that PDR offers, which you could upgrade to at that later date when you want 550 hp. JMO

Call HTT and ask some questions- they can rebuild the turbo and/or upgrade it to a hybrid. If you want to buy a new turbo you could go with a s300 so there will be lots of upgrade options availible when you're ready.

I thought that everything on the holset turbo's were balanced separately? So no need to balance as an assembly.
