I read somewhere that they recommend you use an ATS manifold with a twins setup, why is this?

The ATS manifold in my (Piers) set-up needs to be flipped upside down for extra clearance. Also the ATS unit is a really heavy duty and sturdy (compared to the stock one) so it helps support some of the added weight.

so you can't flip the stock manifold and build a bracket to support the big turbo? I am just curious, and trying to save a little $$ without sacrificing power

Yes, you can flip the stock manifold to use it in a twins set up - many people have.....but the stocker is marginal at best and is prone to cracking from excessive expansion and contraction from heat cycling. The ATS manifold is much more durable and is considered to be superior to the stocker, if you are running twins or not.

would it be bad to run the stocker until it cracks and then get the ATS?

Since you are already going to have the stock one off to turn it around, why not just put the ATS on? It will save you the aggravation of taking the twins apart again.

because isn't that manifold like $400+? I would like to save as much as possible until I really need it. I could spend that 400 on a nice wastegate

It is pricey, but I wouldn't dismiss the idea.

I used the stock manifold for a year and a half. The B2 had a support bracket connected to the NV4500 bellhousing adapter plate. I never had an issue with cracking. Even with twins, changing manifolds wouldn't be that hard since you've had it off once. Depending on the twins setup, you may look at 2-3 hours to replace the manifold once it cracks.

I think the cheapest I've seen the ATS manifolds are about $380 on eBay.

I have been using the stocker for a year and half also. My BHT3B is supported off the block where the heat exchanger once was.

After doing a few different twins the disassembly is not that bad. A couple of beers and about 2 hours and your done...

I think a stock manifold would work, with extra support from below for your big turbo ...but I would get an 01 or an 02 manifold. Much stronger and less prone to cracking.....available for $100.00 +/- in classified ads...either here or on TDR.
