my truck surges after 5in exhaust installed...
i installed 5in straight pipe on my truck and now if i nail it from a stop or kick it down from a cruise to WOT the truck feels like it is hitting the rev limiter.....do i not have enought power for 5in? i do not have a fp gauge. i am running out of fuel? or should i just take the 5in off and go to 4in.

It sounds like it's just the cruddy tranny down shifting to far, banging the rev limiter, and then finally catching and going. Mine does that and I have 4" exhaust. The exhaust has nothing to do with the downshifting.

I don't know much about the 24V trucks but the 12V trucks will loose power and responce with the 5" exhaust unless the truck is at least 475 HP. I found this out myself and so did many others.

A stock turbo won't even come close to being able to support a 5" exhaust. An HX40 with enough fuel will work but an H2E or a B1 is much better. We have tried HX35-40 hybrid but not enough air for the fuel needed. Don't forget you also need to get the air in, an aftermarket intake is necessary for the airflow.

The HP loss was minor, only 15-20 hp the real problem was a loss of drivability. Large flat spots and stumbling. On one truck we reinstalled the 4" from the head pipe back and the truck returned to normal. I was a 383 hp and dropped to 355 but as I said it was hard to drive and I couldn't pull my trailer. I went with a Pius H2E W/14cm wastegated exhaust housing and a stupid pump. That combo put me over 500 and I could pull my trailer again. Also no drivability problems.

Bruce: I am glad I have not experienced those issues with mine. I really like the sound also, not raspy and have not experienced any resonance yet. However I have to say that I have not pulled with it. For now I am happy with the install.

Had a guy yesterday come over to me after I shut her down and say "WOW that is so cool, I can hear the turbo spooling down" "Did you hear it?" "Could you start it again so I can hear it?" He has a Cat diesel pusher motor hog. Says he wants to get a CTD too.
I like my 5", heck I hardly listen to the stereo anymore and drive with the window down cause I want to hear it purr.
