My project - more RWHP
I will be calling several folks to talk about this in person. I would like general input though.
I drive a somewhat stock 1999 Ram CTD, and have installed 4" SS straight piped exhaust and gauges.
Bottom line - I would like a million miles out of my truck and I am not interested in out pulling anyone, nor drag racing this thing. I am also not interested in re-working the head or putting a cam in it. I am here to have fun....and out run the ricers.
Here's where I think I am going.
Box - Edge Comp. Not going to tap the wire, I am leary of that.
Injectors - EDM's, level 3.
Turbo - HX40.
Clutch - South Bend rated at 500+ hp.
Intake - AFE Megacannon or Scotty II. Big reason I am not too keen on Scotty is drilling the hole in the firewall. IMHO, the firewall is there for a reason.
Fuel system - FASS with larger braided hoses and AN connectors. I want to get the OEM lift pump out of there.
I would welcome all comments please, in all or anyone of the above mentioned upgrades. Also, I am thinking this will net me about 500 hp to the ground. Yes, or no??
I want to reiterate that I am not in all this for anything more than fun. Call it a Freudian thing, a premature mid life crisis, or just because I am a red blooded redneck hillbilly (have the boots, hats, dogs, and mindset to prove it!!).
Please let me know what you think. I would like comments on all of the areas that I have mentioned.
One other caveat, I don't have the money to do all of this at once, and would also appreciate thoughts about how to put this together one thing at a time.
Thanks in advance for your input!
Matt

Matt:
Oh no you won't conect the wire
With stage 3s and a Comp and all those wires running around.... the HX 40 will be rather small. Maybe think of a modded HX40 or somewhere in the range of a KSB1.
Won't comment on the clutch, love my slushbox.
The scotty does not drill a hole into the firewall, just into the cowl section where your wiper motor sits. Hence I don't see the safety decreased by the scotty.
If you want to race ricers you will need all the responsiveness you can get. Maybe you'd be better off with EDMs Mach1,5 or Mach2, pierce the wire and take a small hybrid turbo. I think your goal are instant useable hp not the hp you can show off on a dyno. What is your personal preferance in smoke levels? Not more than a slight haze, or "my trail can be seen from space with bare eye" level?

Thanks for the reply.
Not worried about the smoke. I live in a very user friendly state! From what I have read, the EDM 3's behave nicely, that is why I thought about going with them. With my previously mentioned modifications, will they do okay, i.e. is it overkill or underkill and can I make the most out of them?
I do want to have some off the line responsiveness, and I don't tow. Also, I am not interested in setting any dyno records, per se. I just want this bad boy to act like a bad boy.
Based upon your info, I will be going with the Scotty! Wednesday is pay day, whoo whooo!
I am new to all of this and need all the help I can get. Tell me more about tapping the wire on the pump please?

You probably wont make 500HP with that combo. As you can see from my SIG, with a TST COMP. box on level 9, A B1 turbo with the big exhaust housing, which flows more than a HX-40, and EDM injectors, I was right at 500 RWHP.
Without tapping the wire it will be yough to accomplish that.

If you want 500hp, your going to have to tap the wire.
Tapping the wire is not bad.
Dont get the FASS in my opinion its way overpriced, just get some drilled banjos (you'll be fine with those under 500hp IMO).
HX40 is for large injectors with a pump with a tapped wire.
I would also go Level 4 injectors, (125hp).
I would also recommend a Haisley dual disc street clutch.
500hp is easily attainable with an HX40.

1) The Edge Comp is a good box although without piercing the pump wire you won't get past 400 HP. To get your 500, you'll need to pierce the pump wire, and if you're going to do that, you might as well go with the TST PM3, which has a better bottom side power, IMHO.
2) Good choice. The Mach 3's from DonM are 125 pony injectors and smoke less than any other 125 pony injector on the market. They will also deliver you a great bottom side power that an extrude honed injector will never get to.
3) Skip this critter. You want reliability, then look to a KSB1. Bullet proof, and will spool every bit as quick as an HX40. The KSB1 will get you to 450 - 475 with the pump wire pierced. A full B1 will get you to 500, but will be laggier on the bottom side.
4) Match the clutch to your power. If you decide not to pierce the pump wire, you'll only need a clutch good for 400 HP. Overrating the clutch will just cause grief, as it won't seat properly.
5) The FASS system looks like a winner, but if you don't tap the pump wire, then you don't need it. Skip by the banjo bolts (useless at 400 HP) and run with -8 lines between lift pump and injector pump.

Re:My project - more RWHP
I went to high flow banjo bolts. Idle was only 13psi fuel pressure with a new lift pump and sustained WOT would pull fuel pressure to 2.5psi!
I changed out hi flow banjo bolts this weekend for -6AN fittings and 3/8" fuel line. Instant 15psi at idle and haven't been able to pull fuel pressure below 7psi with stock lift pump in stock location. At least on my rig, the larger fuel lines are helping, so I believe they are a worth while investment.

Just installed TST-3 with remote from ROD at wildcat. Awsome. ;D Still waiting for Mach 2's from Don M. also from wildcat. Still have turbo lag but have to save $$$$$ for that. Might have to change truck name to white lightning. 8)

If you want more face to face advice I suggest you attend the INDTR lunch on the 25th at the Greenwood Hooters. There will be a few trucks there with mods similar to what you want. And of course Wings!

I guess I must have a magical lift pump, its still working with 500hp to the ground, and drilled banjos'.
[/quote]
Maybe, but also keep in mind that you're 1 truck who's having great luck. We tried high flow bolts in a dozen trucks over 350 HP, and only had lasting success in 2 cases.
It wasn't enough success to tell us that we had a proper solution, so we had to look elsewhere (believe me, I wish the bolts had done it). Utilizing the high flow lines, we haven't had a lift failure, and we've now got 5 guys in the 450 - 500 range. I don't much care for only 8 PSI at WOT, but 2 of the lifts are nearing 60K now.

It must be that gooooooood Indiana diesel fuel! I'm running drilled banjos and a stock pump and all is well here to. ;D
I'm no where near 500hp though. :-[
