My first pull!! And now have a crack head!!

For the first time, i pulled a sled. I think i did pretty well for never doing it before (293ft) and for having 35in tires, i think truck did good! BUT, It got VERY hot! i got to end of track, and it just smelled hot!! noticed a little smoke coming out from under the hood. When i got home, i was looking over everything and noticed the 2 of the ears for the exhuast ports on head were cracked . My guess is because of the very high EGT's, that it expaned so much it crack! So i guess now i get to buy a new head (after i spent the money on this one with valves, springs, etc!!) So my question is, What do you do from keeping this from happening again?? 3piece manifold?? I know some of the big boy pullers run crazy EGT's, what do they do to keep head from cracking?? Also, does it hurt to drive truck like this for a while, till i'm able to get funds to fix it?? Oh, and Vid's soon to come on the pull as well Thanks guys-Chris

I believe some people use a water/meth spray to control high egt's...

a cracked head is way cheaper than a melted piston.

I would be careful running around on a cracked head. Who knows what else could be cracked inside till you get it off. Pics of the carnage would be cool.

My buddy has a cracked head just infront of #6 exhaust port on is 12V.. Its been cracked for the past 40,000 miles.... Just adds coolant every so often! But like stated above, way cheaper than a melted piston.

Yeah, cheaper than piston, your right. But i know a lot of these guys are getting into 1700*+ EGT's I think i was around 1600 or more, how are they keepin heads from cracking?? Or is this just a odd case?? I've never heard of cracking right at the ears like it did. I hope to have pic's tonght posted.-Chris

The exhaust manifold heats and contracts when it cools and can break the ears off the head. A 3 piece manifold should keep that from happening.

Any possibility to having them welded back together?

With a 3 piece manifold that might just hold.

If its just the ears on the head that cracked, I'd keep driving it until you get a new head. Probably have an exhaust leak or two, but thats peanuts compared to having your truck down for a couple weeks.

I talk to the guy that does all my motor work fianlly. He said he has seen it a few other times but not very offten. Heat is just a part of it, the other part, some heads had poorer casting's than others. therefor easier to crack. So just going to have to take chances with another head i guess. Sorry no pic's or vids yet, have camra probs.!.

I have never pulled, but I have seen 1820*F at the end of a 1/4 mile race. On my truck, the coolant seems to spike-gain 20* and that's about it.

My cousin has a built 12 valve that he runs the 2.6 turbo class with. He has been pulling it for 3 years now on the same head every weekend during the summer, and he hasnt cracked it yet. His Pyro is pegged at 1600* almost as soon as he is off with the sled. Who knows what they go to after that.

Are you sure the head wasnt already cracked there? That seems like a wierd spot for it to break.
