My dads truck will not tow
My dad has a 1997 dually 4wd, cummins diesel, automatic and we tow 5 horse up and back to ny and the truck goes up hills doing like 60 65 and i know the truck should be better then that the truck has no power and will not tow. When we start it up it puts out a lot of white somke we sent the injectors out to day and hope that it fixs the proble. We tow hay back from ny to ct sometime on a 9 ton trailer but most of the time we tow the horse trailer back with 90 bales of hay in it so whats going on with the truck is it the injectors or the lift pump. And the truck stalls a lot when we get of the highway and try moveing it around at the shop it stalls when we stop hard
Thanks
Dan

The lift pump should not be the problem on a 97. I would check all of the previously listed items plus the overflow valve on the injection pump, stock muff. and cat (chunck em), and the air filter.
Good luck

I would check all of the above ESPECIALY timing. That thing probly needs to have a good run through, things like clean the fuel screen, replace return lines, timing, tighten intercooler clamps and such, adjust valves, etc, etc.... How many miles are on it?

Stalling problem might be simply the idle adjustment. Should idle about 850 rpm in neutral with a warm engine. It can fall off on these trucks as the idle stop wears, and results in stalling during parking lot maneuvers, etc.
I agree you have other problems regarding power and smoke.
