my 98 12 v , mods and impressions

I normally wouldn t do this but I m so impressed with the truck I almost feel I have too. The mods may want to move this but it is related to hi perf mods.

My truck is a 98 12 v DRW 5 speed with 166k miles quad cab 4x4.

I did 370 injector, #10 plate, bhaf, 4000 gsk and yesterday a home made 4 inch exhuast. I ditched the cat and oem muffler, for 4 inch pipe and a 4 " dynomax. It is no louder then the oem set up , atleast in the cab anyways. The egts dropped 75 - 100 degrees at idle, from 375 to 275-300. At cruise 77 mph flat ground (3.55's) its at about 675 -725, was at 800 ...........

I think I can still go 1400+ but not near as easy as before and yes the waistgate is blocked , still on the stock turbo. The smoke has deminished, although I can still smoke out a ricer or stop traffic if I want too, I actually like it, the smoke on demand part, or I can drive all day with none, its just how you drive.

Anyways, its runnng fantastic, will spin all four rears pretty easy.....and its at least partly in due to what I learned here.

Any comments on the egts are welcome, I m curiouse how much I could tow weight wise and still be safe on egts.. and highly recommend this type of set up. I have a lot of fast cars, but this truck is really fun too.

i have about the same set up as you. your egts will get pretty hot pretty quick. with a decent size load. i would suggest a turbo upgrade next, i am going to a hx 55 single. but a 40 would be a better all around set up. i put on a 14cm housing on my 35 and it helped a bunch. bumping the timing to 16 also helped the egts. i can tow 30k gross without any trouble, but i need to keep a eye on my pyro all the time. and forget the cruise control, it will bury your gage.

Similar set up here on my '96. I think the move to a HX 40 compressor was the single biggest improvement on the EGT side but I can still bury the gauge at will. Timing and 370's are next. I just wish I could find a deal on a #10. As for towing I have only pulled about 6000 lbs so far but it was pretty much effortless, even up the big hills in PA on I-80. Definitely keep an eye on that pyro when towing though.

I bought a 4k gov kit and I liked it at first now I hate it. My truck jerks and lopes its hard to drive and I'm the only person who can drive it now. Forget pulling a trailer at 1800RPM the truck starts a lope and if you don't move you foot it will take off in a wild lope and ca move as much as 500RPMs on the tach. > :'(

I don t know what causes the lope, I was concerned I would have to deal with it, having heard others talk about it. The only problem I had was it would occasionally die when lifting off the throttle , like coming up to a light......so I turned the idle up from 750 to about 820, that took care of it....completely. I would suspect that the lope is caused by the springs being to tight, but I m not sure, I had a hell of time getting mine in as far as I wanted, mostly because I cut and grooved a large screw driver to turn the nut.

My drivabilty is just like oem with four times the pedal, it seems.

I thought they were too tight too but I took them to the las click before they fall off and it is still there. I Think I'm going to take one of the springs out hence makeing it a 3k gov kit :-[ When I get some money I will have the pump sent off anf put the spring back in. I really miss pulling with my truck. it really makes me mad when it does it and it seems more apt to do it when warm than cold I guess I need to talk to piers AGAIN
