Motor rebuild questions? PLZ HELP!
Just purchased a 99 qc shortbox 4x4 sport with 350,000miles on her from my uncle dirt cheap but body wise in great shape its a 5 speed 235hp. Has new transfercase and rear end rebuilt about 60,000 ago clutch is weaker then hell and mad oil leaks everywhere! I also put a new vp44 on it about a year ago for my uncle. Has 3piece manifold and it has a cut off stack on it! And afe intake. He also bought it new and put a flat bed on it when he first got it so the box we put back on it is like BRAND NEW! Got this ***** for 5,000 took a loan out for 8,000
Uses for this truck: pulling skid loader, inclosed 28ft trailer, camper trips, car trailer, drunkin mud bogs, snow plowing, pullin stuff around the farm, along with kickin some powerstrokes *** at the county fair sled pulls
Ive chipped all my dads cummins and exhaust never done anything internal to a cummins motor!
Already have quadzilla adrenaline, mach 4s, gauges, and the bd single turbo!
heres some other ideas!!!!!
1 Just freshin it up with some new bearings, rings, and head gasket?
2 buy cummins overhaul kit w/ stock sleeves pistons and the works?
3 found marine pistons for 12v do they make different pistons for 24v?
4 leave it all and just run it with new turbo and chip?
5 aftermarket cam?

No sleeves for this engine-- it's a parent bore engine.
Use a rebuild kit for the RV engine-- RV pistons, RV cam. I think the RV pistons are factory coated, even. I'd do the new pistons/ring/bearings/cam and have it overbored a little--.010 or .020 depending on piston availability.
That's what I would do, anyway.

You can get a fair idea of the compression by checking the pressure at the breather tube or you can have a shop use a compression tester at the injector ports. That will tell you if you need to do anything with the top end.
Loaded heads are fairly cheap for the 12v, dunno about the 24. You can get some nice aftermarket pistons out there in overbore sizes if you need to bore for some reason. usually youd KNOW if you needed a cylinder rebored.
If you add much more power youll need to watch the head gasket. Might want to stud and o-ring for peace of mind.
To do the cam you need to take all the coolers and stuff out and lift the front of the engine or cut the lower radiator support out and weld it back in.
Its a big job but its worthwhile if you are going after big power.
At that point you may want to just take the engine out of the truck so you can give it a good going-over where everything is accessible.
