more fuel from 215

My 97 with the mods listed runs pretty good but when I put the hx40 with a 16cm housing on it with temps outside around 55 it will pretty much clear up the smoke at about 45 lbs. of boost. This is with the wastegate plugged. I really couldn't believe a 40 would clean up the fuel from a 215 pump and 370's. How much power will lazer cut dv's add. Am I missing something on the pump to get more power out of it. I have checked where the arm hits and it is right. I do plan on hooking up the wastegate to keep from hurting the turbo. Thanks,Gary

Have you had your truck dynoed?

Have you put a #10 plate in your truck 1/8" from all the way forward?
The dyno #'s I have seen from the 100 plate have been a little low.

I say get it dynoed then go from there. How are your temps? From what I have read they should be hot with just a 40/16

Well, don't ride me real hard cause I know better but the pyro doesn't read very good laying in the tool box in the garage.I haven't tried a real plate just a 0 and the 100 I have now. I had the 0 in a 180 pump but it was way to smoky on the bottom for me. The truck puts out a decent amount of power just not the smoke I thought it would with a small turbo. I do have a shaved head and thin washers on it which may change the way it smokes. I just expected to peg the 40 like I did the hybrid that was taken off of it. The way it is right now it looks like a bigger turbo or twins wouldn't do any good if there is no extra fuel to burn. No, it hasn't been dynoed. Dynos are kind of hard to come by in the part of the country I live in. The closest one is about 100 miles away.

Wow I won't ride you to hard lol but it is probally a good thing you don't get lot of smoke!!

215 pump, 370, and a plate slid forward should be making a lot of smoke whether it be no boost or full boost 370's smoke a lot. You should also be at 450 at least!!!! I would not put it on a dyno with no pyro guage though. I wouldn't be in it longer than 3 or 4 seconds.

On the thrid run of my dyno run my egt guage was flying past 1600!!! Had to get near 1700+!!! I had to drive about 100 miles to put my on the dyno but I think it is worth the info it gives you and to see where you are at.

Have you ever had a pryo in your truck?

How far is your plate slid?

I really don't run the truck very hard for very long at a time, just short spurts. The plate, it's all the way forward. I really do enjoy horsepower, ya ought to take a ride in the jeep with me. The truck does make pretty good horsepower(I twisted the output shaft in the overdrive off with the 35-40) but you would think it would smoke alot more with the stock 40.

I really don't like smoke all that well it's just that if it was smoking heavy on the upper end you would know there's alot of horsepower left. Is there internal adjustments that could be out of wak that would be holding this pump back. The pump is a stock pump with just a plate and 4000 gsk with about 140,000 miles on it.

Am I expecting to much?

I don't think you are.

Try slidding the plate back about 1/8" or so. Or a different one. Install the pyro and see what temps you are getting.

The 12V's I saw on the rollers with 370 put out a lot of smoke on top.

Have you raced any bombed diesels.
To me something doesn't seem right.

Install the EGT guage!!!

i have the same mods as you except i have a 0 plate and a hx35 and i don't have alot of smoke past 2500rpm. if i'm in nuetral and slowly rev up to 3000rpm i get no smoke at all. i'm like you i want to know how to get this thing smoking like the pullers do in nuetral when there building boost. i think my next purchase is going to be lasered dv's hopefully that'll get me smokin

Gary, you really don't want to spin that HX40 that fast...

on my truck the EGT's climb at the same rate if I run the turbo at 45psi or 39psi...

so it's not helping performance... but it could hurt the turbo.

Forrest,I do plan on hooking up the wastegate this weekend and trying to set it on 40 lbs. like you suggested. I just run it threw a country quarter coming home and it bounces around the 45 and up lbs. It is bouncing to much to really tell. The truck does put out a light black haze when pushing it hard. Boy it really launchs hard in fwd and with 20 lbs. of boost. It seems to go out the end at about the same speed it did with the hybrid on it. I really think I'll try to get the twins done and get them on the truck but I will put the wastegate and pyro on this weekend. I wish I had one of these motors in about a 4500 lb. truck, it would be a terror. Thanks for all the info but I would still like to get more fuel out of the pump!

Well, I did find some more fuel with one of the suggestions gunracer1 gave me. I also got the pyrometer hooked up on the truck today. The truck also got the wastegate hooked up. It goes about 42 lbs. without any adjusting done on it. I'm going to try to get it down to 40 this week. The numbers on the pyro don't go up high enough for the old 97! It ran by 1600 pretty fast on the first run. I guess I need more air and maybe slide the fuel plate back some.

Does yours run this hot too Forrest?Where do you have your plate set at. I did a little grinding on the afc leg sticking down and it seems to have more fuel. I guess it was riding the afc instead of the plate. I did tighten the star wheel tonight to maybe control some of the bottom end smoke. It was completely loose. Its kind of hard to watch the pyro, tach, and boost gauge and shift threw the first two gears. Things happen pretty fast when it comes up on boost. Man I like these diesels!

Question on the hx-40's. I found a guy with a 43 psi actuator from banks. Would this keep the boost low enough? He didn't have one at 40 psi but is looking. He had one at 35 psi. Which one should I go with to protect the turbo? I'm gonna be adding a lot more fuel before long.
