Modify stock air box?

Maybe this should be under General Topics. If so, please move as appropriate.
Would there be any concerns about cutting away part of the stock air box, below the filter, to allow somewhat of a Cold Air Intake? Already have reusable oiled filter. If this can safely be done, it would save a little money.
The only thing that really comes to mind would be water getting splashed up there.
The other option being to use some type of flexible ducting to collect ram air from front of the truck.

Guess I missed that one. I have had it in there since 2003. But good to know.
Thanks

I used a hole saw to cut holes in mine...it didn't make that much of a diff. Don't waste your time, remove the oil filter and just install a bhaf and make your intake out of pvc. Search on here for tons of ideas.

The oil film off the oiled filters collect on the turbo charger impeller face. You might have to clean off the oil film.

I've dynoed 500rwhp on a stock air box (I cut out one side of the box), so it works. I know when the turbo starts barking, its time for a new filter.

I had a BHAF on my last truck. I'm going to try this method this time. It's cheaper.

The stock filter is a decent desigh, I think, for all but the most outrageous HP applications. It draws air from the front top fender, where it is cool, thgrough the fender and into the box. I think it is good for 400+ HP. I think drilling holes may not help, and certainly not when it comes to water, rain.
Spend your money on a smarty, edge. or other HP maker, if you must
The stock location is also good for crossing floods & high water.
