Max boost with stock turbo?

Max boost with stock turbo?
You guessed it - I have high EGT's. I was told to up the turbo boost from 31-32 psi to 38 psi via the boost elbow set screw. 1 1/2 cranks later, smoke is greatly diminished and pyro doesn't go up as fast as the speedometer anymore. But, boost is much higher at medium throttle (upper 20's to 30 psi). What can a stock turbo handle? Should I wrap the turbo with a scatter shield? : What boost are you guy's running with similar mods and stock turbos. Oh - one more thing. My boost guage (35 psi max) appears to be pegged at full throttle. It's an Autometer Z series and stops at 34psi. I thought for sure it would over travel a bit if it were pegged. I'll hook up another gauge to determine peak boost.

The HX35 is capable of handling a fair bit of boost. I've seen guys throwing 45PSI at them with no concerns, however at these boost levels, you're likely robbing some HP and definitely raising EGTs instead of lowering them. As you've been instructed, set your waste at 36 - 38 PSI. And you may want to consider a different air system than the BHAF. At higher boost levels, they just don't flow enough for your application. New air will likely get your EGTs down another 50F - 100F.

Rod

about 35 right now, i've put 40 through it with no problems. after 35 though the turbo will start creating heat. i've been thinking about getting the 16cm^2 housing myself as my egts are high too.

Tom

I've hit 40 with mine. I'm only pushing 30 right now and my EGT's stay at 950 WOT.

950 WOT? I'm guessing your probe is post-turbo?
On my truck I can hit 45PSI for a second then it comes back down, but I don't like getting it that high. Have a friend on TDR that blew his stock HX-35 @ 49PSI!
See's about 40-42PSI a few times a day usually, but generally never goes above 30.
Now I'll say a small prayer the thing doesn't blow cause I don't have the $$ for a PDR HX-35-14cm WG'd

Well I have watched mine bounce around 38 at full throttle. My EGT's are high. I too have heard people getting 45-48. I still have stock turbo and housing. I need a larger housing though from what I have heard.
I just need some good advice on where, and what size to get. Chime in anytime guys. ;D

Yes my truck is on the wimpy side. It only puffs smoke a little. Just like yours.
No that darn monkey has escaped from the zoo. I will try again to get those doctored banannas. Maybe in
a larger housing.

Re:Max boost with stock turbo?
Thanks for all of the replies. I'm going to hook up another temporary boost gauge (higher reading) that will allow me to set the truck up properly. I'm hard pressed to break 1300 with it set where it is right now and all of the thick black smoke is now light gray soot.

Re:Max boost with stock turbo?
Where is the set screw for the hx-35? When I put on my edge EZ it came with a little boost elbow to get more boost. Can you increase it even more? I just picked up a Premium FMS, and a Banks Waste gate actuator. Does anyone have any experiance with the banks waste gate actuator? Do they work well?

Re:Max boost with stock turbo?
I may be wrong, so if I am please jump in and say something. I believe the set screw is on the 12 valve trucks.
The boost elbow from the boxes are there to do essentially the same thing.
