manual vs. auto.. plates & injectors bombing differences?

I'm window shopping now, but planning on getting a '96-98.4 truck in the near future...

Since the auto trucks were rated lower than the '96-'98 manuals.. what's the difference?

Is it just the injectors that are different? The actual pump?

(Just for reference, my goal for the first stage is around 330hp, enough to run with the new trucks... next goal is just over 400hp, with a different turbo and manifold.)

(Tranny, gauges, exhaust, and Scotty are the first things to go on)

I am only asking because good condition 5-speeds are VERY rare around here, but auto's are a dime a dozen.

I'll do a search, but if someone cares to toss it in.. Delivery valves? need for the better ones? gain?

I'm guessing I'm at around 400HP with my set up. Haven't put it on the rollers yet to find out. If you plan on dropping the $$$ for a trans, might as well go with the auto. Then you won't have to set your beer down to shift.

Mine has the 180 pump and it still moves out pretty good. I don't think the pump will be a limiting factor at your HP goals. The 180 pumps came with the 181 DV's (at least mine did) so you won't need those until you start pushing BIG power.

oh, I forgot to mention... this is a daily driver, but it will be towing around 7000 initially, with the potential for that to go up to around 11-12k in a year or so. So no drag race queens..

If you're stuck on buying a quad cab, you'll have to find a '98. They didn't make them until then. The injectors and the pumps are different between the sticks and autos. Take a #10 plate for example. It's rated at 220HP/570TQ for the auto and 330HP/750TQ for the stick. So that will get you your 330HP if you buy a stick. You'll eat up the clutch before you know it and run high EGT's though.

club cab, quad cab, as long as it has somewhere to toss all my stuff.. the quad cab would be real REAL nice, but I'm not holding my breath.

That's pretty much my question - what makes the manual's pumps rated at higher power level from the factory, and what needs to be done to the auto to make it equal?

injectors?
Delivery valves?
Something non-replaceable inside the pump?

i.e. if I get an auto, a #10 plate, 16cm housing, and some mild injectors (the 275 for example), would the power be similar between a manual tranny and an auto tranny engine?

I don't know the actual differences between the pumps. Maybe someone else can help you with that. The 275 injectors you see around are for 24 valve engines. I've seen some 300's and of course 370's. There's also some aftermarket injectors available.

You can make a decent amount of HP with the smaller pump. Remember though, when people tell you the auto won't take it, believe them. Mine is in the tranny shop right now as I type. I've got the dreaded TC lock-up slippage and shudder. I changed to 215HP (stock manual trans) injectors about 3 months ago, which pushed it over the edge. I'm supposed to leave for holidays on Sat morning. Life's never dull...

The amount of horsepower is directly related with how much money you want to spend.

Your in the same boat I am.I was really wantin a 96-98 5 speed 4X4 2500 but I can't find them so I've changed my search to 94-98 5 speed 4X4 2500 or 3500.

I found a 95 4X4 5 speed 3500 flatbed.Power everything, clean truck, 119k for 13,900.It that a good deal or not?

That seems a little high to me but I don't think I want a flatbed or even a 3500 for that matter.

I just bought my 96 with 94K for 12,900. See sig for particulars... That seems a lot high for a 95. I would think somewhere between 10K and 11K...
