Making an HX35 or HX40 into BB turbo?????

Has any one ever messed around with making a regular bearing turbo into a ball bearing turbo. My ole man is a machinist, and can do wonders, I would think it would just have to be machined out to press fit 2 sealed bearings on the shaft. Its aluminum so if it got messed up it could just be welded and fixed right? I would keep the wastegate hookedup like regular so it would not get to much pressure and scatter, but I think it should give you incredible throttle response for cheap. What do you guys think, could it be done?

I sure wouldnt mess with it. I dont think it would help spoolup too much, and I dont think ball bearing chargers will take the abuse a standard journal bearing turbo will.

Don't forget that ball bearing turbos are more than just to regular ball bearings. Turbos will spin in excess of 200k rpm, speeds that regular bearings are not designed for. You will spin the shaft in the race, or the bearing will fly apart. You also have to think of the weight increase that the two inner races are going to add to the shaft. The rotating assembly doesn't weigh very much, those races will dramatically increase weight, and the power required to spin it.

and alignment of the shaft to bearings....any wiggle room of .001 will eventually wind up in destruction.

Well shoot, i thought for sure I was on a good road to something good, lol, I for sure don't want my turbo to scatter and go throught my cooler and everything. Guess I will just have to find me a good hx40 and just use it for now till I can afford a bb turbo. Thanks for the help guys.
