Mad ECM Install ????
I was just wondering what all it takes to put the mad ecm in? Is there any tricks that make it go smoother? Also I haven't looked for it too hard, but where is the ecm mounted on the truck. I just got my tax return and its just burning a hole in my pocket!
Thanks,
ADAM

the ecm is mounted on the drivers side of the engine block down below were the fuel filter is . I dont have a mad ecm but i bet it would make it easier to pul the fuel filter housing off to remove the stock one and install the mad ecm . i think i read some were that you need to reset the apps when you install this ecm . call bob wagner or doug from smokin diesel and they could tell you more . im sure some of the guys that have them will tell you more.

Very easy!
Can't miss the 50 wire plug that attaches to the ECM socket...on drivers side.
Took me a leasurely 1 hr to install...with 3 - 10 min breaks to stretch a bad back. One hex head screw to remove 50 wire plug...and socket wrench, with 3"+/- extension, to remove 3 bolts to the protected (enclosed) circuit boards.
See picture here http://www.wagnerandassociates.biz/
Was easier on mine because have no fuel filter canister...due to FASS. Agree with above...might want to lossen fuel filter and push it out of the way.
Direction that come with MAD ECM are simple, exact, and complete.

I was thinking while driving in to work today,
does the ECM absolutely need to be mounted to the engine?
Is there enough wire to move it somewhere else?
Would you need to plug the holes it attaches to?
The engine just seems, to me, to be the absolute worst place to put a computer.
Heat plus vibration is not good at all for printed circuits.
The PCM is mounted to the firewall, couldn't the ECM as well?

phox , anything is possible , but undertaking that job would be lots of work. it is mounted there for reason of each harness is design for that pacticular engine and not which OEM installation.

Had same thought while changing mine out! Must be some special "stuff" inside the aluminum case for the boards. Based on little to no reports of ECM problems...Cummins must have addressed this concern well.
Marco? What does the inside look like? Anything special in there?

What's inside the ECM?
A Computer or better embedded system, with CPU, Data Storage, Ram, D/A A/D converters...
Them guys @ Motorola have done a great job. I agree the location isn't the best for such a system but it is there....
In my truck the ECM is no longer in the stock location but is sitting on top of the PDC ( for ease of R&D ). To get it there I had to cut all the wires solder in longer ones. It's a BEAR of a job. I think it took me almost two full days. Would I do it if I hadn't to? NOOOOOOO.
