Look at the "coffee cans" the ricers hang on their tailpipes.

I'd say the sound changes.

I went from stock tip to a 6" stainless steel one that is 24" long and the tone became a lot deeper so i agree it does change the sound.

Fart cans is what we call them, but they are also going from a 1.5" tailpipe to a 4" fart can.

I dont want to get stopped by the police and I heard that the larger you go the more mellow the sound is. What about going with 6" stacks instead of 5"? The DP will still be 4" I was just wondering if increasing the size of the stacks would mellow out the sound so the police dont get all huffy because they dont have em and stop me .

Thanks

By adding 1" diameter to the last 24" on your exhaust WILL NOT change the sound. I had Borla Exhaust on my old truck (Ford Lightning) and it had a good rumble, but the tips were ugly, so I cut them off and welded on larger ones for looks, and nothing changed on the sound aspect, the only way the sound is gonna changes is if you increase the pipe size for a great distance, 24" is not enough to make a noticable difference.
obviously the longer the tip, the more effect it'll have, but it WILL change the sound...

as for larger = mellow?

it also = loud

my 5" straight pipe is ROWDY compared to a straight 3" system... it's smoother... not nearly as raspy... but it's fuggin' LOUD!

So a 3 inch straight aint that loud then? I was going to wait to remove the cat and muff until I could afford to put on stacks or a Straight 5" system, but If a 3 inch straight dumped under the bend aint that bad mabye Ill do that until funds agree.
What do you guys think?

if you dump it out under the bed you will get soot all over underneith i would at least try infront of the wheel then you will just have soot all over the wheel

i don't think you can live with it dumped under the bed, unless you are a teen ager.

i cut my muff off, and the 'necks who put it on, used completely straite pipe, which put the tip of the OEM exhaust under the edge of the bed/quarter panel.

it was HORRIBLE. it just resonated in the whole truck.

put on a tip that extended the outlet of the exhaust system out past the quarter panel,

ooooowwww....relief!

look at where my tip is on my gallery, and by how far back it is (by the bumper instead of the wheel) and it was only under by a bit, but the $30 tip from Advance saved my marriage, and my sanity ( i was driving from SC to GA and back every weekend)

IMHO, get a tip and extend it out a few more inches, cheaper than a new exhaust,

i'm staying with my strait pipe & K&N FIPK, but it's louder than i would like, but my teenage daughter and wife think it is the bomb diggity.

3" straight is loud, it's just not as loud as 5"...

definately don't dump it... get it out from under the truck... to keep soot off of it, and to save your hearing.

How about a 6" 24"long tip, wonder if that would do anything, i know you can get one from rip. Even if it didnt do anything, man it would look good

no offense to anyone who has one, but I'm not a big fan of rolled tips or slash cut tips... certainly not a fan of rolled slash cut tips!

I looked high and low for a straight cut/straight lip 6" tip... couldn't find one

If its stainless couldnt you just cut it off with a chop saw?Might be a little redneck but it would work wouldn't it?

Forrest;

As you can see I have a 4" MBRP exhaust, when I drive passed 70mph
or 2100 rpm the drone drives me nuts. what could I do to get rid of the drone?
and I don't want to put sheets of lead in the cab. keep hearing about the
donaldson muffler but dose that really work? Thanks

rather cut it w/ a radial arm band saw... (which I don't have of course )

my chop saw isn't super accurate, cutting 5" w/ a chop saw is bad enough, I can't imagine cutting 6", and you ever cut stainless w/ an abrasive wheel? not fun...

as for the drone? run a resonator as close to the downpipe as you can...

I prefer sound deadener, a section of flex pipe, stiff hangers, and adding mass to the exhaust pipe... comfy inside, rowdy and nasty outside

when new, I left the stock piping, but killed the cat and muff and welded in pipe. VERY raspy and loud.....all the way to the mudflap. After putting on the 5" from the downpipe back....no cat ot muff....and twin stacks, the sound was real mellow. Got a little louder opened up, but not bad IMO, and still not raspy. Granted I use a crossover instead of real smooth 90's, which will knock it down some too.

Whatever you decide, watch out for gasoline muffs, even though some come with big enough ins/outs, they don't flow the same and can hurt performance. Any straight through HD factory, or aftermarket works nicely, without making it loud or restrictive.

Stay away from resonators....they really make the drone BAD.....tried that one. Even if you run 'em all the way to the back, the low frequency resonance is non-directional and will still get you in the cab.
