Looking to join the culb but would like advice.
Hi
I am considering buying a used ram 2500. After having red threw a few threads I come to the following conclusions.
1. the 12v is better than the 24 (but tougher to find)
2. its a real good idea to replace the lift pump as it might save the injection pump.
3. avoid any block with a 53 on it.
4. don't be overly concerned with what "normal gasser people" would consider high mileage.. like over 200k miles.
5. the trans. on the dodge trucks aren't any better than their cars / mini vans so expect it to die.
6. even used they are pricey... in my area a 98 to 00 range between 16k to 20k Can$.
7. the Cummins is more durable, reliable and efficient than the power stroke that's in my company van.
I think I have all my bases covered to make a informed decision but if I'm wrong about anything or have left anything out please correct me.
Thanks

the 12v is not necessarly tougher to find than the 24v.
replacing the lift pump to prevent a injection pump failure is only on the 24 valvers
yes
yes
more than likely
humm, they arent more expensive down here
and finally, YES

Is the lift pump issue the only thing that's relay wrong with the 24s? In my area (Quebec) the pikins are pretty slim for pre 98 trucks that are in good condition so I may be some what forced to get a 24v if I want a Ram.
How often do injectors and I.D.M. computers die on a Cummins? My company Ecnoline (witch I don't pay for ) recently had its IDM 1500$ and two injectors 750$ each replaced.
thanks

we replace the injectors when we want more power. and at that you can get a set for 300-1300 bucks depending on size. NOT because they go out
the computers RARELY and i mean RARELY crap. i had to replace my ecm but im one of the only ones. and its not that big of a deal.
basically the injection pump is the only thing that gives the 24 valves a bad name. usually if you keep the fuel psi up, all is good.

Thanks for your replies.
Its good to know that you can get a set for less money than just two international 7.3 injectors. I've been telling the boss for years to change that truck.
As far as the pump goes, if I understand correctly Its possible to just install a after market pump and a gauge (doesn't have to be in the tank can be located on the frame) to make the sudden death injection pump problem a lot less likely.
And I should change out the fuel lines for larger diameter while I'm at it.
Is there a "all included kit" to replace the pump?

FASS is the a well known, reliable all in one kit. Vulcan and Scotty have larger lines that can relocate your stock lift pump, or put in a pusher pump like the Holley. Depends on how much cash you want to spend.
