Lookin for a cheap truck to put my Cummins in

How much is required to put a Cummins in a 2500 gasser? What are my options for doing a swap for less than 2k? Are there any trucks with a drivetrain that will hold the cummins without many modifications? I want the 2nd gen look but haven't seen any for less than 6k. The older chevys look nice and would throw everyone off.

Why not drop it in an old D-150 shortbed? If you don't work the truck the rear will hold up OK.

Will that hold the weight upfront?

I would look for a Ford F450 with a blown Powertoke. That would hold the motor. I doubt you can do any swap that is any good for $2k

You can swap the suspension off the D-350 if you want, the frames are the same. All you really need to do is the springs.

there is a 2nd gen 2500 gasser in the classifieds. Would that take much to do? I had a 2nd gen minus engine, but someone bought it before me. Back to searchin junkyards again.

Do what piers is doing. An only 78 or 79 Ford. They can look real cool. The Ford 9" rear end should handle the power just fine. Easy and Cheap to restore.

I found a couple parts that will help the power. How much better is the 2nd gen cam. Found one for $185 shipped? A lift pump for $80 shipped. Now I just need the P7100, lines, and injectors right? I allready got the 2nd gen timing case. Will the 1st gen cover work on this? Do the prices sound right?

There was a site online I accidentally found one day where a guy was professionally installing the CTD in Ford PSDs (all years). He'd do a private vehicle for about $10K or so, but was having no trouble doing it. I thought I bookmarked it, but can't find it now...

www.fordcummins.com They are doing the cummins conversions. If you stick with a 12 valve you would be better off doing it yourself. They can be knowledgeable but they get top dollar for any parts they sell.

Thanks clc900! I'll probably go that route (12v) on my wife's PSD when the time comes.

I think I found a truck. My neighbor has a Ford Dually. Hes said it had a 390 V8 gasser and a heavy front axle. It also has a flatbed so that should make the stacks go in easier. I havent ran the vin yet but its a 74-76 he couldn't rember for sure. It has a 5-speed manual tranny. Since it had the heavy front axle the suspension should be good right? Now all I have to figure out is the wiring. He said he has $1700 but doesn't expect to get that much out of it. I think i'll offer him about 1k for it after I find out about the tranny. Any thoughts?

Its probably a NP435 with the granny low. I think you will have problems using that tranny and bolting it up to the cummins. It should have a NP205 Tcase so if you have a NV4500 that would mate up to the 205 with an adapter. Good Luck! That would be an awesome swap.

Well your best bet is a pre 76 Chebby. You can find the old military 1 tons for pretty cheap, and they run the same drivetrain as a Dodge. D60 front and 14bolt rear. You can throw the cummins in there, and try to adapt an allison to it with a NP 205. If you can do that, you have a SUPER stout drivetrain. You can find these miltary rigs for pretty cheap at the old military swap meets.

Good Luck

i second the pre-76 idea, 3/4 and 1 tons had very solid axles! i really like how the 73 and older trucks look, just my opinion....
