The cams are what vary the preload on the side gears and clutches, ramping the preload up and down as required. This system drastically increases available clutch loading when required and slackens it off when it is not required. This almost infinitely increases the life and performance of the Plok when comparing it to a unit like a Tlok which is assembled with a fixed amount of clutch preload that wears down over time (or quickly if abused) which in turn will allow for more and more slippage until the LS no longer functions.

Does the trac lock not have any small gears in it? The reason I ask is, when I busted my dana 80 a few weeks ago, there were pieces of small gear in the bottom of the housing. Would the presence of small gears (not ring or pinion gear) rule out one or the other of the two factory lsd possbilities?

Both the Tlok and Plok have spider and side gears.

I'll have to pull the cover off and take some close up pictures then. I suspect it's the traction lock, simply because it failed.

I didnt know the difference in limited slips. That would have influenced my decision. I have a lock rite in my ford 9 inch and it works great for what I need it for. DONT PUT IN A DETROIT if you are using it for the street. They are built tough, no doubt. The shockload will not break the locker, it will break everything else that works with it. Imagine if you could rotate your driveshaft a half turn before it engages, then a half turn when you let off. It will break things. Just how long before it does is how you use it. THey are great off road, and thats about it. I have seen what one does behind a cummins on the street and it dont look pretty. Even in a dana 70.

Here is my question to Randy's Ring and Pinion:

I have heard that the (For my 99 Dodge 3500 DRW 35 Spline Dana 80) a Dana P-lok is actually a re-badged Trac-Lok instead and that I would need to order a Dana 70HD P-Lok and have the ring gear holes upsized to the Dana 80 size to get an actual P-Lok. Can you clarify the issue for me and tell me how much the labor costs to have you enlarge the ring mounting holes?

Thanks,

Joe

And the Reply:

The Dana 80 p/l has been discontinued, you may be able to adapt a d70hd p/l BUT the ring gear will only be retained by the bolts not the pilot on the carrier, The ring gear will stick out over the edge of the p/l and it is definitely NOT recommended. We will not machine a d70hd p/l to work in the Dana 80

So what is the true answer? Any actual experience with installing a Dana 70HD Carrier into a Dodge Dana 80 Rear Axle? Which shops are willing to perform the machine work necessary to make it work at what cost?

Thanks,

Joe

If you do a search on the dana 80s there are some threads about restacking the clutch plates. I plan on doing this next time i service my diff. I might even try to put some extra plates in to make it lock harder. But I'm trying to get a spool like diff with out spening much money.
