You will have to pull the diff cover off and see if the cross pin rides on cams within the carrier.... if so, you have a Plok.....if the pin is round and in a round hole you have a Tlok.

Pretty much given up on the Trac Lok

$925 installed is the official price

$675 for the diff, and $250 in labor

If I am going to spend that much, I will just get an ARB

$800 for the diff and $200 for compressor and $250 to install diff.

Mine as well spend the extra $300.

How many Dodges came with the Dana 70 HD? Is the HD stamped in the housing or just the 70? How can I tell for sure what I have? I know it is a 70, not sure which one??

Unfortunatly i have to disagree here....i know this is off topic, but i thought my truck had a D80....I read this and was unsure, went out, looked at the tag on my reer, and it tells me its a D80. Unless...mine is a case of someone on the line thinking this was a manual or 3500...

I wonder if it's a case of
"well, we are going with AAM axles next year, let's just use up the rest of the Danas we have lying around"?

No its a case of there was a special line item option on the buildsheet specifically for ordering the D80 upgrade on automatic equipt rigs.

There was a thread where we discussed this several months ago

The D70 HD actually uses a D80 carrier but has the ring bolt circle diameter to match the D70 ring gear. The D70 HD carrier can have the ring gear mounting holes slotted to accomadate the larger D80 ring gear bolt circle. This is a popular mod for a D70 HD Powr Lok LS to be installed in a D80 (the D80 version is no longer offered but the D70 HD version is) as it is the best LS you can buy for the D70 or D80. A few of the larger R & P shops offer this service when you buy a Plok from them.
Here is my question to Randy's Ring and Pinion:

I have heard that the (For my 99 Dodge 3500 DRW 35 Spline Dana 80) a Dana P-lok is actually a re-badged Trac-Lok instead and that I would need to order a Dana 70HD P-Lok and have the ring gear holes upsized to the Dana 80 size to get an actual P-Lok. Can you clarify the issue for me and tell me how much the labor costs to have you enlarge the ring mounting holes?

Thanks,

Joe

And the Reply:

The Dana 80 p/l has been discontinued, you may be able to adapt a d70hd p/l BUT the ring gear will only be retained by the bolts not the pilot on the carrier, The ring gear will stick out over the edge of the p/l and it is definitely NOT recommended. We will not machine a d70hd p/l to work in the Dana 80

So what is the true answer? Any actual experience with this and which shops are willing to perform the machine work necessary to make it work at what cost?

Thanks,

Joe
