Locker on dually?
I asked this in 1st gen forum too. Has anybody run a locker on a dually? I have read some advertise that they release to smooth otu turns. I lost the reaer end in my truck and need to replace the planetary/carrier. I am going to stay away from limited slip, but I'm looking for input on the driveability of a locker.
Thanks, Don

A locker is not as smooth as an LSD, but WILL lock up to keep the axles spinning.
The only problem I could see with this is winter driveability. Duallies are bad enough as it is in the snow. Add to that a locker and you would have a machine that wants to spin pretty easily.
I think it would actually be dangerous-- especially in W Michigan where snow is plentiful.

I've driven vehicles with lockers, and they are brutal. Every time you make a tight turn you get a bang and a jerk out of the dang thing. They are a lot tougher than an LSD, though. I don't think it would be any worse to drive in snow than an LSD.

Lockers are violent I have had a couple, I did not like them on the snow and ice nor when driving around town. In the end since Trac lock cases kept breaking i changed to a Power Lok carrier i havent had anny problems and it gives me about 70% traction versus the 25% i got out my fricking Trac Lock.
check out my pics if you question the effectiveness of the Power Lok. Thats a loaded car trailer being pulled in snow on an extremely steep hill.
mine has 100k on it im due to stick a set of clutches in soon otherwise off road and on it is extremely predictible and very reliable. If ever stuck unlike most LSD's with a Power Lok you can stand on the brakes preload the posi because of its ramping design and almost always get both tires to spin and drag you out. The Plok is really well mannered on ice too, very predictable alot more so than my detroit was. Only time it didnt work, when i broke a front axle shaft, but then again when i busted an axle with my detroit i had the same problem.
Also i know a couple of guys who have lost thier R&P's prematurely, we suspect because of thier Detroits ratcheting while towing loads. As to Detroits in Duallys i have removed almost every one that i have installed for friends, alot of them had already self destructed in towing applications, like stated above duallys are loose on the road any locker that has smooth engaging features is not designed for the torque of the cummins.... Every Soft Locker and EZ locker i have seen used in Towning Duallys has not lasted, ratcheting while turning under a load is fatal to a locker.

You may want to take a look at the Tru-trac. It's not a locker, but a really tight limited slip. I've been running one in my front jeep axle for 3 years, and it's never let a tire slip like a limited slip. I haven't done much road driving with 4wd on, but it's never jerked or popped like the detroit I've got in the rear. If you want the best of both worlds, check out the ARB air-locker or the few electric lockers on the market. That way you could switch off the locker when you don't need it, and turn it on when you do.

I am going to say 2 things
1, -I have L.S. and works nicely
2 ,-I have a dually 1 ton and it drives in the snow like a slot car on a track ......almost bolted to the road......so I do not get this idea that they fair badly.........have had all kinds of trucks and this is the best

Thanks guys, I have decided against a full time locker. I have seen the power lok advertised, I may go this rout. Dana has discontinued the 3.07 gear, and the carrier is specific to this gear (thanks a lot Dodge). I am waiting for some reply's to calls I have made, but may have to re-gear both ends.

You can ussually find a used 3 series dana 70 P-lok on ebay for $100, buy a clutch kit from any one of a number of diff companies i think randys had the best price make sure it is the HD clutch kit version with 4 curved and 6 flat disks some shops will pawn off the LD version with only 2 curves and 8 flats obviously you can assume that the 2 curves is alot less effective than 4 for Preload.
