I need some help with some exhaust issues in Texas. I finally have chosen a new exhaust system for my truck but I have yet to purchase it. I went to a local muffler shop and talked to them about how much they would charge me to install it. While talking to them they advised me that it was illegal in Texas to do away with the catalytic converter since it was factory installed on my truck. (I have a 97 2500 4x4 ext cab diesel) Does anybody know if this is true or not? Please help!!

yeah its illegal for the muffler shop to remove the cat on a onhighway vehicle. in texas its legal to run a exhaust w/o a muffler, the turbo is considered a muffling device. but i am running no cat and i get inspected just fine, i just turn the smarty on half power so it dont smoke.

Texas state law requires that you have a muffler on a diesel. The TX Transportation Code states that a muffler is: Any turbine wheel that accepts exhaust gases. The people at the inspection place won't buy it though. It's the truth though, I'm a LEO and just had a Transportation Code update.

The turbo is considered a "muffler". But it is irrelevant anyway because Vehicle Inspections in Texas on Diesel trucks are a "safety check" only.
$14.00, check lights, brakes, horn, blinkers.....and you are done. No emissions testing of any kind (on diesels).

I didn't think Dodge had cats on thier diesels untill 04.5' model year. My 01' doesn't have one. I get inspected just fine. As was previously posted it's a "safety" inspection on a diesel, and it's $14.
