K&N vs BHAF

Gotta love these air filter wars!
How many of you will keep your truck for 400K miles? If the answer is no, don't worry about which filter is best, they all do a good enough job to keep the motor going for 400K.
How many of you dump your oil change fluids into the fuel tank? It will run just fine with a gallon or two of waste motor oil.
I run the K&N because it flows more than any other filter of the same dimensions. It lets a little dirt and oil through but hey, I like faster spoolup and more HP. Still going strong with 245K on the clock and K&N'd for last 55K miles.
I got suckered into buying Fleetguard stratopore oil filters. Sure, they have larger ports on the top for maximum flow and they don't come apart like Fram filters, but those Mobil 1 M403 filters did a better job at removing soot from the oil.
Your truck, your money, spend it how you like. The discussion is what's fun!

My solution
After a lot of research on here and many other places I settled on a Donaldson. Part number B085011. It was a whopping $26.58 in the latter part of last year. It is 8.5 inches in diameter, 11 inches in length, and fits nicely clamped on 4 inch pipe. Oh and if you look it up on the Donaldson site it is listed as being used on a Cummins 6BTA5.9 in the aplication data section. Figure if it lasts a few years I have done good.

But anyways, most of the Ottawa yard dogs we work on have big barrel filters on em, and they almost all have ISB's for engines. And that is a factory filter, so it cant be a terrible choice. And after reading about how Cummins doesnt like K&N's, I'll be ordering me a Baldwin BHAF thru work since I get em @cost

If you read up on cummins engines, it's acceptable to run 5% used motor oil. Some of the newer engine have built in ports that allow the motor to burn some of the crank case oil so the driver simply adds motor oil on a regular basis and new oil filters on the scheduled maintenance.
I personally have gone as rich as 10% used motor oil when I changed the oil in several vehicles one weekend and didn't want to store it.
More than 1.5 gallons per fillup will start to make a noticeable increase in smoke when you lug the motor.
You can add cinnamon oil if you scented smoke. Vanilla lamp oil seems to add a little sweet aroma as well. Wesson vegetable oil burns just fine and seems to quiet the motor a little. 2 stroke oil burns well but it does add little to the odor, reminds me somewhat of the exhaust smell from my old 2 stroke Honda dirtbike.
In short, an older style diesel motor will run on just about any kind of oil.

12v will run a 50/50 mix of waste motor oils just fine
