K&N vs BHAF

IMO, if you can't afford a full intake kit and don't want to plunk down 30-50 dollars every year for the BHAF then just get an AEM dryflow filter and set it up just like you would a BHAF, inside a heat shield and attached to the stock air tube. You can buy the AEM filters in whatever size you want/need, they have great filtration, high flow, are cleanable with their solution and you don't oil them so no over-oiling. I just went through the cleaning procedure on mine and it was a breeze, although you will need to buy their solution every year which I got online for $12 but that is a heck of a lot cheaper than the price of a BHAF filter every year. And it's roughly the same cost every year for the cleaning/oiling kits for the AFE filters. I also run a pre-filter on mine to cut down on how often I need to clean the filter, it keeps the big stuff off the filter.

I use a BHAF because I refuse to pay $200-$400 for an intake system that is nothing but a plastic pipe with an overpriced filter attatched to it. (I didn't say its not good, I said its overpriced) The factory intake pipe on 2nd gens is smooth on the inside, properly curved and the same diameter as the aftermarket ones, but free. I don't get the point of replacing it.
My opinion is mine, I created it, therefore I'm partial to it.

well i have heard all the bad mouthing about the bahf. and i have been running them for years. an i have never had a dusted intake with one of them. and i have heard all the storys on how they wont flow enough air. well i was on the dyno last weekend with a really dirty bhaf on the truck. i mean the filter is black. on the third run i thought lets see how bad it is hurting me. so i pulled it iff and ran it again, i picked up 7.5 hp and this is at the 500 rwhp level. i bet i would not have picked up 5 hp if it was clean. i have come to the conclusion that the bhaf is well worth the money.

I agree guys but I'm taking it one step further and saying why pay $50 every year for a BHAF when you can buy an AEM filter for $50 and then your annual cost is only $12 for the cleaning solution since the filter is reusable.

No bending here... Err ah, well anyway I agree as I had a "drop in" replacement on both my 1st gens just for the serviceability of it, no gain that I could detect. This 97 on the other hand, that was a big improvement. I still have the BHAF in the garage for service days on the SAII...

Well working part time at the local Wally World tire & lube, I've seen a couple 2nd Gens (two of 'em) and about a half dozen 3rd Gens come through over the last year with K&N's. Now either all these guys over oil the filters, or thier turbo fins are just naturally dirty....since i take the intake tube off to get at the oil filter.....of which these guys are also getting Fram oil filters (a whole 'nother thread).
Anyway, my BHAF has been on the truck for almost four years now and about 45k miles. It's dingy in color but the intake tube is spotless, and so is the turbo, and I've never noticed a rise in EGT's.....probably hard to see something like that though. The Outerwears pre-filter is looking like I could use a new one, so maybe this summer I'll replace both.
Where do you pick up an AFE if I decide to go that route?

What is the diameter of the BHAF hose that is used to attach it to the turbo inlet? I have 4 filters left over from my Ford Super Duty and the inlet side of the filter has a 4" Diameter.
Thank,

To make your BHAF filter element last longer just remove the filter take your Shop Vac and insert the hose into the filter opening and set your shop vac to the blow function. Make sure you are either holding your breath, upwind or wearing a mask! You will not believe how much dust/silt they can hold! For fun, you can weigh it before and after! You will be amazed!

What are you using on your 3rd gen for an air filter?
I'm trying 3 different ones; airaid(oiled)
afe pro dry super stock
amsoil dry
When I feel like dumping $300, I might try Scotty III????
