K/N filter

I had heard a rumor from a friend, just thought I'd drop it in here to see what everybody thought.
A friend of mine told me not to run a K&N filter, drop in or cone system, on my Cummins because the filter material is not strong enough and that when the turbo spools up it will actually damage the filter and suck pieces of filter material into the motor. I am not sure if I believe him or not, had never heard that rumor before.

Also,, I was wondering how much more noise was head in the cab when you install one of these "cold air kits", the cone filter on a tube with the heat shield.. I've had them on several gas motor cars/trucks and can vouch for their effectiveness. This is my first diesel motor though. I am not too worried about hearing too much engine noise, I just don't want a real annoying whistle to listen to while towing for hours.

Welcome aboard Matt,
Most people around here will advise against running a K/N filter because the filtration is not as good as other filters. Some people will argue it is fine. There have been several threads about this issue. I did a search on that subject before and came up with more than I ever wanted to know

I agree with hotdram, before this topic gets out of hand with opinions, just do a search on this site about K&N air filters and I'm sure you will get all the info you want.

Welcome!

Search is good idea! Problem is you can't search anything undr 4 letters!!! I'm sure there is a good reason for this...but I have no idea what it is????

(Can't search K&N, MAD ECM, DTT, EZ, B-1 Turbos, ATS, AFE, TST, UTE, DSS, etc.)
Can't do "Air Filters" either...so I don't know what to tell you to search!

Just one point...have never read any info claiming K&N filter material got sucked into engine. You will get more turbo whine and air suction noise with the FIPK II (cone) also more air! I would not call it "real annoying". I had excellent luck with one up to 400 HP!

RJ

PS; Why does a search have to be min of 4 characters?

You can search for anything you like as long as you include a wildcard such as a "*" to make the 4 letter limit Example; K&N*

Just my two cents worth.........I run a K&N with no problems and have never heard of the problems you mention. It's an easy install and easy to clean. You can probably find it cheaper than some of the competitors too.

Theres only 3 good options for filters and K&N is NOT one of them...

Scotty 2 with the updated Uni filter
AFE intake with Proguard 7
BHAF

Thanks Larry

Wish I had asked 2 yrs ago! So that's what a wildcard is?

Some dealers will void engine warrenty's if they find a K&N.

I have done a little research on K&N filters and the BHAF. (aka big honkin air filter)

The silicone in the oil is usually a little higher when one uses a K&N. (Silicone is the dirt particles in the oil)

The funny thing about the K&N and factory warrenty's are the dealers are selling them!!!

I know Rowland ran a K&N FIKP (spl). Maybe he can go into more depth on how he liked it, and how it performed.

He is also a professional in the oil industry and can help shed some light on my post about whats in the oil.

Silicone is actually just sand.

Can't add much, except, IMO most problems come from over cleaning and over oiling. I ran the factory cone filter (comes oiled at the factory) for 40,000 miles and never touched it. Never had any oil residue or particulate in my intake tube or in throat of turbo. Oil analysis was always excellent...including Silicone. Should not need cleaning or oiling for 70,000-100,000 miles...unless you hit a West Texas dust storm.

Have heard the horror stories but none here. Over 425 HP I started to run out of air...but up to that level I was very happy.

That being said...If I had it to do all over again....Scotty II is best way to fly, if your doing away with the factory air box... even if it's your first add on and you don't cut the hole for a yr or two,! Only filter system you'll ever need...short of going with twin turbos. JMHO.

RJ,
I have heard of K/N's not sealing well in the airbox. Did you have any fitment issues? I heard that some people just put a bead of silicon around the rubber on the filter to help.

Can't say! Never used the K&N inset that fits the factory airbox. Had no trouble with the FIPK II cone filter.

Just like the filters on MX bikes...

You have to put a layer of grease all the way aroud the rubber flange that sits on the factory air box. That will keep almost everything out.
