Jake Brake?
I'm wanting to add a Jake, Pac or Banks engine brake. What's your guys take on them? Do they really work? Do they make any noise and if so, what does it sound like? I tow monthly between Los Angeles and Utah and got some pretty good hill climbs. Thanks

I've never seen a "Jake brake" on this motor. Only Exh brakes. If you do a lot of driving and pulling heavy loads, especially in hills or mountains, you will save a LOT of wear on the brakes. I highly reccommend it. The sound does change some but mine mostly hisses with a drone change. It will depend mostly on the rest of the exh system.

Ive got a Jake - no its not a real jake break but it is made by Jacobs......and it works great (even when not towing or hauling). If you are looking for the "semi" sound - save your money.
I see you have a 4 inch exhaust.....the only brake that will work for you is the US Gear Decelator. Its tru 4 inch and installs in the downpipe. I believe the rest are 3 inch and wont work with your 4" exhaust system.

I have a Pac Brake Exhaust Brake, works great for stopping/slowing. Especially since I got the #60 exhaust valve springs installed and plugged the hole in the flapper, brings her to an aburb whoa now.
Before it wasn't too bad but not too good either, I actually thought she worked decent before but after getting both those items installed... boy oh boy I'm a happy camper. I can just about shut her down completely and never touch the brakes. I have to remember to at least touch the brake pedal so folks behind me know I'm stopping (could get interesting if I don't let them know what's going on).
Sound wise - as posted before it does not change it much, has a loud hissing sound out the tail pipe, sounds different to say the least.
Now when I flip it on an she's idle'n at first it about snuffs the engine out but recovers very quickly, before plugging the hole in the flapper the sound would change (slight load) and that was about it. Heats up much quicker when I flip the switch in the morning.
I don't think I'll drive another diesel without one, it's just so nice to have backpressure on demand.

dont know about your 4 inch system or where it comes in but my pac brake mounts on the back of the turbo with a 3 inch 90 (90ish) that has a flange for the exhaust. if you just bolt to that flange should work but i dont know. i love my brake a also wont own another diesel with out one. need to get the 60 pounders still. i liked the sound it made then when i straight piped it its just a hiss and i dont warm the truck up that way any more cause i have neighbors

I have to agree with everyone else. Once you get an exhaust brake, you wonder how you ever towed without it. I love having it! My only regret is that when I upgrade to twins hopefully next year is that I will have to get a new brake.

Yep! as I said before Pac Brake. They make a 5" remote exhuast brake.. A jake brake is a name (Jacobs) for of a company that makes engine brakes. A engine brake is used to open the exhuast valves to dump compression this turn the engine into a brake. You do not find engine brakes on 5.9 cummins they can use a exhuast brake which blocks of the exhuast and builds up back pressure which slows the engine down. It like stuffing a potato in your tail pipe.

Pac brake
I have been running a PAC Brake since 1999 on my 1999 and it has worked perfect with no problems. When you are empty it will stop the truck in second gear. It has saved me some on brakes as well. I use it as much as I can both empty and when towing. I transport a 17,000lb trailer and it works well when you are hitting heavy grades to assist the brakes. They may not be a true jake brake but they are worth the investment and are easy to install.
