J Hook Installed... Very Pleased

Well I finally got around and installed a J hook on my wastegate. I have the HY turbo so the J Hook is the easiest option.

I love the feel and the power gain. I think my transmission shifts a lot better now. Before it hesitated before shifting in high gear. Now it shifts all the way through to OD without the hesitation. I guess it was defueling.

I can build 30psi very quick!!! The turbo screams much louder!!!

J-Hook is used where a boost elbow can't be.

Auto tranny trucks come with the turbo that can't use the boost elbow, I believe 2001-2002 and maybe the 3rd gens.
(maybe even 2000, but I'm not sure)

Manual tranny trucks came with the turbo that can use the boost elbow.

One is the HX-35, the other the HY-35.
I think the X is the good one, the Y is the J-Hook one.

J-Hook locks the wastegate actuator closed so the waste gate doesn't open at the stock 19-20 psi.

tst one looks much safer as it is just incorporating a stiffer spring and still allowing the wastegate to open. completely locking the wastegate shut is somewhat of a bad idea because you could be over spooling the turbo out of its efficiency range (over 35-36psi) doing this will lead to pre mature turbo failure.

There is a variation of the solid turnbuckle idea that incorporates a spring at one end, making it adjustable so you can have your wastegate open right at the precise moment of turbo inefficiency.
(trial and error of course)

Googled but didn't find BD power J-hook...seems like BD uses pn 1040310 BD performance elbow oriface for Dodge is all I found...

however I did find a lot of sites selling the Bully Dog J hook kit for right around $50 (+/- depending on the site) ...this is pn 182555 for '01 - '02 CTD with 47RE tranny (auto) so that means the HY turbo.

They say "The J-Hook regulates the waste gate, facilitating greater boost numbers which rise even higher as performance modifications are added. The higher volume of air will also help keep exhaust temperatures down."

When does the wastgate open with this J-hook kit? How is this kit, anyone know? Does it really help a lot? It's a relatively simple mod, is it worth doing?
