installing valve springs with head on engine

I want to install 60lb springs before the motor goes in to the truck. figured it would be easier to do on the shop floor than in the truck. Any one done it this way ? If so what did you use to compress the valve springs? I was thinking to just bring the pistons up to TDC for each cly to keep the valves from droping to low.

genos garage has the valve spring compressor for under $30. worked good for me. all in all its a pretty easy job. just use a magnet to remove the retainers so they dont fall into the pushrod holles. cover any holes up also.

I used a little compressor that KD tools sells when the engine was in the truck and it wasn't to bad (5-6 were a little tight but...) as you said just put the piston to the top and away you go.

Yep they make little spring compressors for use with the head on the engine.

On gas engines I have a little adapter that screws into the spark plug thread. Has a air nipple on it. It allows me to put air to the cylinder to keep the valves up. Works like a charm for changing seals or springs.
