Installing trans temp guage

I purchased the replacement cooler line that has the test port in it where the sensor can be installed. My question is: when I remove that line, how much fluid is going to come out? Can I get away with doing just this job, or will it be so messy that I should just do the fluid, filter and gasket change?

I ordered filters and gaskets so will have to wait for those, and if I can do the gauge now I'd like to.

TIA

About 2-3 quarts comes out when replacing the line, but I have always caught it and reused.
