Installing Pyrometer

I am about to install a Pyrometer. I am wondering what is the best place for the Thermalcoupler, in front of the turbo or after?

In the exhaust manifold. It will more accuratly represent the temps.

Look on TST`s site and you will see install info. IMHO Pre turbo is really best.

Here is the best place to stick your pyro probe.

It drilled and tapped in the back outlet of the exhaust manifold. It can be done without removal of the trubo or manifold. Use grease on your drill bit and tap. While drilling go slow and clean the chips up often. After you get your hole drilled use a magnet/magnet screwdriver to pick up the few chips. Use the grease again on you tap. Keep checking the depth of you threads with the probe. Don't over tap it...

Yep thats the right place.

Make sure you do put it there and not in the front 3 cylinders port. The back three run hotter (specifically #6) so you want to know what the hottest ones are doing.

6 pyro's would be ideal pointed directly into the individual ports, but not many of us have an extra $800 to throw around.

Not a problem... I figure the picture says a thousand words.

Hes right about that... It my picture the rear of the engine is to the right. So as you see my picture it's in the middle of the rear exhaust port of the manifold.

Just want to make sure of that...

not sure which truck in your sig you're planning on doing, but I remember reading in some posts that, for 12 valves, the front half of the manifold is the place to drill since it's hotter. Maybe more knowledgeable members can comment.

As far as I've seen on all Cummins we always were putting them in the back ports.

But Yes I've heard something about the intake manifold cause number 1 to get a wee bit hotter.

It's time for a Guru to step in here... Just a bit over my head...

Yes, I agree the back is always hotter. My friend purchased a 12 valve 1997 that had a melted #5 piston after the person installed the Banks kit and I guess pushed it too hard. I am installing gauges in all the trucks.

What kinda of pre-turbo temperatures are you guy seeing? At idle I'm getting about 400 f, about 750f at highway speed and wot I have pulled 1200 deg f. I've always run my pyro after the turbo, so I'm new to higher egt's.

With stock exhaust and airbox I could pull 1300*F easy in 4th & 5th gear WOT!

Now with the BHAF and straight piped.

Idle - 200-250*F
Jake & Idle - 400*F
Cruising 55 MPH - 500-600*F
Cruising 65 MPH - 600-800*F
WOT in 5th - 1000-1100*F

Really hard to get to 1200*F now! I'm ready for a either a MAD ECM or a Edge COMP... Someone got some OFF! that BOMB bug is going to bite again...

I guess that mine are slightly higher than yours. To bad I'm one running on 1X1 setting on my comp box and have the wire unplugged to the injection box. I heard that the post turbo runs about 200-300 deg F cooler than a pre-turbo. My pyro is set-up for post turbo and only goes to 1500 deg F. So a quarter mile run will more than likely go around to the other side. I've pushed my post egt's to 1500 deg F in the past. When I took apart my motor everything looked good and my old head looks in pretty good shape after a 100000 miles of abuse.
