I picked up brand new front and rear diff covers for $350 out of a publication called Uncle Henerys which is a state wide buy sell and trade magazine. My questions are how much gear oil will I need for the front and for the back? I know these covers have a larger holding capacity then stock, but i am not sure how much more. Second question is what wieght gear oil should i use, i plan on using synethic. Is Mobil 1 a good gear oil? I dont haul much at all, but i do like to take her to the strip and also pull the sled. Mike, I'm running Royal Purple Max Gear in both diffs. 75-90 IIRC. PML covers at both ends.

Hey Doug, how much did it take to fill each of them with the new covers? I thought you had MAG Hytech covers?

If you go to Mag-hytec's site, you will be able to download the installation instructions for your cover. With an auto, you have the Dana 70, so just look up that model on their site and it will tell you (I have the Dana 80, so mine holds a little more than the 70, so I can't tell you what you need )

Not sure how much...I filled till the side fill hole had fluid drip out. Sorry not much help.

A few years back the TDR magazine did a dyno test on rear end lubes. Lubrication Engineers (LE) SAE 90 gear oil showed the largest dyno gain, which was around 5 hp.

My Mag Hy-Tec rear takes 4-5 qts per change. That's on a Dana 70.

Front takes 3 qts, If I remember correctly?

If racing or towing I recommend an 80w-140 gearlube, but living where you do, 80w-90 or straight 90 wt is enough.
Not a big fan of Mobile I. In recent years, their quality has slipped, IMO.

LE (noted for their gearlubes), Royal Purple, Schaeffers, Amsoil etc. (any of the higher quality lubrication companies) have better stuff.

The instructions inside the Mag hytec cover said 8 qts I beleive for my Dana 80 rear. I think I only used 6. I used Redline synthetic 80w 140. I mainly used the Redline due to the fact I could get it for about 6-7 $ less than the Mobil 1 per qt of the 80w-140. I think I paid about $8 per.

I heard somewhere that if you tip rear end both ways you can fully drain both the axles. Never had the patience, but this fact may explain the difference in quantities.
Don't need that kind of patience with the Mag Hy-Tecs.... cause it's so easy to check/change it more often, which is a good idea if pulling or drag racing.

I used Amsoil gear lube 90 wieght in mine and my rear 80 used about 7 quarts and the front was roughly 4 quarts (if I remember right). The cool thing about the Mag Hytecs is they have a dip stick, so just fill til it shows full, no need to do the finger test. Also the dip stick and drain are supposed to be 30 inch lbs not ft lbs. Whereas the bolts are in ft lbs. Trust me don't make that mistake.

Thanks for all the advice, i almost bought some Mobil 1, but tomorrow i am going to check at an amsoil dealer and see if i can pick up some of thiers. I am planning on putting them on this weekend. Not many places sell the higher end lubes such as redline, royal purple ect. Where do you guys buy the stuff, places like Napa, Advance Auto parts? Thanks

The local Napa here carries Redline, but he is an independent franchisee so he can carry other stuff. Company stores can't vary their inventory like that.

Generally what I've seen on the higher end syn lubes is that you have to do an internet search on their sites to find a local distributor. Good luck,

Try the oil manufacturer's website to see it they list where to buy their stuff.
I went to Redline's website and found a few race/performance shops around Dallas that carried the stuff.
