Installing EGT gauges

Just got a set of Di Pricol gauges and an A-Pillar mount. I was planning on installing them today. I've read a couple of techniques on it, though. Is it better to remove the turbo, as recommended by Diesel Injection Services, or is it okay to leave that attached and just use the magnet to remove the shavings? Any help would be appreciated!

I got by without removing the turbo, I greased the drill bit and the tap, and cought most of the shavings, then fished around with a slim magnet untill it came out with no shavings on it.

WHIFF,

I've seen a lot of discussion on this topic. Because your probe location for preturbo is into a horizontal manifold it might be ok but I still think that for the small amount of effort it would take to unbolt the turbo I'd go that route. It's a personal decison but the results of not getting all the chips out could get expensive.

This is a personal preference thing. Some guys do, some dont. I didnt because I didnt want to mess with the turbo gasket but others have had no gasket trouble. I did what Iron Horse did. So its your call.

Re:Installing EGT gauges

I tried to undue my turbo. Ended up twisting the head off the bolt. > So then I had to go and drill that out, and put a new bolt in. Not fun. I just greased the bit and tap, drilled and tapped slowly, and then used a magnet to get the shavings out. Worked good for me.

WHIFF,
If you do decide to remove the turbo, I would suggest that you soak the bolts and nuts with a good penetrating oil for a few days prior to removing the turbo. When I changed the turbo on my 92 a few years back I did this and everything came right apart. Also when you put it back on use some anti-seize on the threads.
---
Al

Alright, I'm gonna give it a try without removing the turbo. Now, how do I know how deep to make the tap? Can anyone help me with that?

Re:Installing EGT gauges

I was worried about the exhaust manifold drilling too. Here is what I did. Put the vacuum cleaner nozzle about 1/2 inch next to the drill bit at 9 o'clock and one magnet at 12 and the other at 6 all as close to the drill bit as possible. I ran the bit dry so the fine shavings were easily sucked by the vacuum. The magnets caught odds and ends and did their job very well. Only stuff that was in the manifold was the big stuff when bit pushed through that last thin layer. Used a flashlight to look into manifold and a q-tip with grease and retrieved what I thought was 100% of all shavings. This part what I figured would be the hardest was really one of the easiest. Good luck

I guess i did it the hard way I used a ATS 3 piece manifold
I installed the 1/8" size. After drilling I marked on the tap the thickness of the manifold with tape. I would tap so far then check to see how deep the fitting went in. Being carefull not to tighten the fitting real tight untill I was sure I was at the correct depth. The perfect depth is when the bottom of the fitting is flush with the inside of the manifold. Having it tapped to far will let it stick into the exhaust flow causing turbulance and also a hot spot.

Re:Installing EGT gauges

Well, I got it done! Thanks for all the advice. I didn't remove the turbo. I just used a ton of grease and stopped every once in a while to clear out all the shavings. I then used a magnet to clean out all the stuff that fell in the manifold. I tapped it and marked the depth with a piece of tape, then used the magnet again. It seems to have worked! My EGT gauge was working when I went for a test drive.
Again, thanks to everyone who gave me advice, especially Gitchesum. It made my day a lot easier!

Re:Installing EGT gauges

On Saturday I drilled and tapped for thermocouple. I used a dry bit and light pressure. Before the bit broke through, I stopped and cleaned up filings with powerful alnico magnet. I then started engine and turned on e-brake. Started to drill with almost no pressure. As the drill broke through the filings blew back out the hole. Greased up my 1/4 NPT. Checked the brass adapter a couple of times before had the right depth with tapered threads.
Just finished connecting wiring for pyro and boost. Glad I had the Factory service manual, wiring diagrams are sure useful. As well as info on dash.

Gauges seem to be working properly. Pictures to come later. 8)

I used one of those dial gauges. Yes I used tape on both. But it was easy to see how far I had the fitting in because when you take it out the threads are scored.
I like the idea of a magnetic drill bit! That would wotk great.

But why not stuff something into the end of the tailpipe?
