Do a search on this as I have read that it may not be the best idea. I cant remember for sure but I do remember reading about putting the probe into the port directly not being advised. Good luck.

Is that because it could damage something or it gives a lower reading than the hot line would?
I received the gauge and temp probe from dps on this site. Where my temp probe screws into my test port he sent me a extender of sorts??? It screws into the test port and then the temp probe screws into that. I am assuming that when the oil flows by the test port some of it flows into the temp sensor port and that is what give me the readings. I normally see about 160 when just cruising around town in stop and go traffic. any info on this subject would be appreciated..

Seems the majority of folks think that the best place is in the hot side line heading out to the trans cooler. The pan gives you an "average", but the hot line is just that, the line that is most representative of whats going on in the valve body.
(I think) correct me if I'm wrong.

I have mine in the hot line. All I did was buy a tee fitting from napa with compression fittings and cut my hot line and splice it with the tee. Then the probe and extension as you said will screw right in there. Gives the most accurate reading where the fluid is the hottest. Somebody on here has a pic but I cant remember who. I will look around and get back to you.
