Injectors or Box?

Injectors or Box?
I am wanting to get some more power, and am debating on getting either a set of injectors or a fueling box. What are the reasons for adding one before the other, or does it really matter? Would the price for a set of injectors and a box similar in power gains be close to the same? If you guys could do just one or the other, what would you do and why?

I had that same question, just added a v5 about 3 weeks ago, haven't done the injectors yet. Big difference in performance and is fun to drive now. I guess it would depend on what size injectors you add, as to which mod to do first. Don't have any experience there.

what do you intend to use the truck for?? and do you have gauges, specifically fuel pressure and pyrometer??
I'd recommend the Smarty downloader first.... http://www.madselectronics.com/Smarty03.html
should net somewhere in the range of 60 hp on the dyno... similar gain to the non-wire tap boxes on the market. The S.O.P dyno feels like a heck of a lot more though. If you want more power than that or need in-cab adjustability, I'd probably go with the TST w/remote.

Truck is a daily driver as I am still in college, but do use it to haul livestock trailer and race car with. No I dont have gauges and realize I have to get on the ball for those. What are some typical HP gains with injectors? What are some common injectors that guys are running? And what types of prices can I expect, any websites that have them online?

Whatever you decide on, just remember you WILL get bored with the new found power and find a NEED to go bigger. I thought my 100 hp DD-3's were too much when I bought them, now I know they are too little. There are plenty of different brands and vendors, take some time and do a search on 24v injectors, you'll have plenty of opinions and information. I've heard good things about F-1 Mach's and DDP injectors. I'm looking at some Mach's from DonM eventually.

Ok,
Gonna go out on a limb on this one as I asked the training guy at Cummins the same question. I got a very informative answer and thought I might share the answer I got. The guy was nice enough to print out the Cummins manula on changing the injectors for me and also offered ot answer any other questions down the road. Cummins South close to the airport here in Atlanta, ask for Vernon.
Now, he said that you needed to remember that the injection pump was made to work with the stock injectors, having the proper flow and pressure for what the truck has stock. If you go messing around with changing the injectors, you will upset the balance that Cummins built into the programming on the VP-44. Taking that into account it leads me to believe that the first logical step is to modify the programming of the VP-44 by using a box or programmer. If you do the injectors first, the injection pump will not know there has been a change in the amount of fuel needed except by signals being returned to the ECM and I am not sure it would get enough information to add enough fuel.
I was all set to do the RV-275 injectors first then add the box, but his logic tells me to do the other way around. This thinking has also made me think that the Edge EZ with the jumpers for different size injectors is a better choice than the VA. I was also set to buy the VA box but I wasn't sure if it would make the best use of bigger injectors. I know it is splitting hairs, but if I do it, I want it to make the most.
Maybe my logic is all screwed up but the Cummins instructor was trying to help me understand the inner workings and get me the best bang for the buck. Now I need to go ask him about the bigger turbo.

I've got both, I had a box first, then I put in the stg 5 nozzles, the box is the best bang for the buck, the injectors w/out the box doesn't give you near as much without fuel increased fuel from the pump.
If you did get injectors first you should at least get a Mad ecm or smarty too.
At least this has been my exp, the post above kinda backs this up.

I personally think you are better off starting with a box.
Then get the injectors.
A good setup for someone on a budget is the following:
VanAaken Smartbox R. This is what I have and I am fairly happy. Only paid $275 for a brand new one off ebay.
For injectors, either go mild and get a set of the RV275 injectors which are like $350 or so. Or go bigger and get a set of EDGE Jammer nozzles. $200-250 or add $100 for the whole injector.
I plan on going bigger. I am either going to get a Smarty or EDGE Juice w/attitude. Haven't decided yet.
I also plan on adding the Jammer 3 injectors or F1 diesel Mach 1.6 injectors. I am undecided.
Keep in mind you will also need a South Bend Con O clutch to hold up to the box and injectors.
I personally think Mach 1.6s and a Smarty are an ideal setup however, not the cheapest. At $700 and $650.
You can get the Smartbox R for $275 and the Jammers for $350 is only $625. Less then half the cost of the above setup. You just have to decide what you want and can afford. Don't forget your South Bend clutch for $500.

The manual tranny trucks respond better to injectors. The auto's with a box.
As for hp gains with injectors, it depends on the injectors size and what you want to do. I started with DD2's (Diesel Dynamic Stage 2) that were rated at 80hp for autos and 90hp for manuals. I'm currently using DDP (Dynomite Diesel Performance) J48's, 150hp. They are impressive!
No performance products are cheap ($). Stick with known vendors and known products. There is a huge difference in quality! Check the classifieds on this site and the TDR. Remember buying used can be a gamble.
Decide what kind of performance and use you want for your truck and do it right. Ask alot of questions, there is alot of knowledge on this site. Once you add a little you will want more!

If money is an issue, buy used. I wouldn't worry about the injector story from the Cummins guy. I've run my Mach 4s on the stock Cummins program without issue, wasn't as much fun, but I had to try it.

CTD Neil how much were your DD-3 100 Horse injectors? What if any are the drawbacks to injectors, decreased fuel mileage?
