Improved By-Pass Oil Filtration.
I may be a step behind and missed this in my searches but when I put my engine together in the next few weeks, I plan on installing a by-pass filtration system. The question is where?
I noticed on the drivers side of these blocks there are several plugged ports that tie directly to the main oil gland. One is used to oil the vacuum pump and power steering coupler. There are also several locations for the oil dip stick that are plugged. These return directly to the pan.
I was thinking that that would be an ideal way of connecting in a bypass oil filter. Not that there is much more room on that side of the block, but with twins certainly there is more flexibility. Also the oil in the gland is prefiltered from the full flow filter, extending its life slightly.
Anyone tried this?

On the 12v's, the oil feed to the vacuum pump is teed to hook up to the injection pump. You could get that tee and the 12v oil line to the vac. pump (24v doesn't fit very well), then hook your bypass up to the other side of it. And like you said, there is a seond dipstick hole at the front you could use as a return.

take your supply from the top of the full flow filter it is dirty oil, return the oil to the filler cap, that way you can see the oil and change the bypass filter when it clogs up. horizontal mounting on the frame on passenger side is the easiest to get to. i like on the headache rack, i ran across a new filter that will be super, especially for the 6.7's it is made by luberfiner the filter # is lfp9750 and the mount is lmb451 only a small mod required to use on small trucks

The top ports on my filter mount are clean oil immediatley after passing through the filter. The spare port is used for the second turbo. I could drill and tap another port on the dirty side of the mount. Another problem with twins is that the passenger side of the engine room is now the most congested. Thats what got me wunderin about the driver side.
Your point of putting the return back at a place where it could be observed is a good one. Alot easier than using a hydraulic filter guage.

i have been running them to the filler cap since 1990 on all generations, amsoil makes a nice looking cap to do this with, i thought our shop mechanic said that the port for the oil pressur gage was checked with a wire and it came out on the dirty side of the filter housing.i am going to be abbing two more at the end of this week and will check ,any one out there checked this
