If your 4" exhaust is too loud......
I ordered and installed a Magnaflow 4" system for my truck because I wanted to keep my EGTs down when I was towing. And it worked: my EGT's are about 100-150 degrees cooler. But I acquired a pretty loud drone at about 1800-2200 RPMS. This pretty much drove me crazy, as I'm a music teacher, and I really enjoy listening to the radio or CD while under way. So I ordered a Nelson 51" muffler from Fleetpride, part #86131, 87.00 plus shipping. They had an economy model for about half that price, but it was 3 db louder at 50 feet. I was planning on replacing the Magnaflow muffler (34" overall, 7 inch diameter) with the Nelson, but when I got under the truck, I thought that I would try mounting the Nelson IN FRONT OF the Magnaflow. So I took the sawsall and cut the pipe about six inches in front the Magnaflow, and removed the pipe between the downpipe and the cut. Then I mounted the Nelson between the downpipe and the Magnaflow...... It works great!!!!! I still have that great Cummins sound, but at 1800-2200 RPMS, there is just a faint, low tone, no drone. Of course, I can still hear the clatter from the engine compartment, but it wouldn't seem like a diesel without that! By the way, so far, my EGTs seem to be as low or even a little lower that before the Nelson addition.
I just thought that I would pass this along, as I haven't heard of anyone trying this yet.
