Idle rpm

My truck has been giving me some random idle speeds lately. Seems most of the time that it does it after driving on the freeway for any length of time lets say at least 20-30min. of cruising down the freeway. When I pull of and come to a stop the truck doesn't want to come back down to normal idle speed which I think is about 800 rpms just above the second dash above 1500 and I believe that the small dashes are in incruments of 125 being that there is only three. That gives me my 800 but when this symtom happens it will be idleing at or above 875 usually like 900+ and on occasion up to almost 1000rps. Whats the deal? The truck will not come back down unless I either drive again another 30 min. or so and or I kill the truck, and all is fine when I restart it later and or immediately after. Anybody else had this problem and or suggestions as to what it can be or what I can check? Thanks

My truck will do the exact same thing, I seem to notice it with colder weather. I'll be watching this thread closely.

Did you read the codes with a scan tool?

I have a 12 valve, but my truck was idling up above 800, almost around 900 then I put the GSK in and made it around 1000, now that i've toned it down to 750-800 it doesn't wanna start without a little foot on the throttle.

I had the same issue. On my truck it only happened if I set the cruise. I also had the odd dead pedal situation. If I shut the truck off for about 15 seconds and started the truck, everything would be normal again. I did not have the dreaded 0216 code in the ecm.
I put on a new APPS, problem solved. Check for codes in the ecm and pcm. I forget the numbers but there was one about idle validation. To check for codes in the ecm turn the key on and off 3 times without hitting the starter. Leave the key on the third time. The codes will display one at a time. Write them down. The codes should be on this forum somewhere, do a search. Or post the codes here and someone tell you what they mean.
Hope this helps.

Yes it seems to only be in the cold weather and i will pay more attention but I believe it is always after I run the cruise control, that would be a valid reason as to why it only happens after i've been on the freeway a while i'm a cc fanatic. I to can turn the truck off fire it back up and the issue is gone. No codes thrown out yet already checked several times. What exactly is the apps I don't follow all the codes to well. There is so many! Thanks guys hope we get some more input.

crosenberry, sorry it took so long to reply. APPS stands for accelerater pedal position sensor, more commonly known as TPS throttle position sensor. This difference gave me a $160 break at the dealership when I ordered the overpriced unit. The dealership wanted over $750 for that part up here. I believe they are cheaper down there. The parts guy thought I was a mechanic in the dealership by how I referred to the unit as an APPS and said look in your parts list thats what they call it! The APPS comes as a unit with the bellcrank where the throttle cable attaches.
There is a thread on TDR about someone trying to use an aftermarket TPS on the bellcrank. This unit is a direct match as far as mounting is concerned, but there is a glitch in the electronics. Maybe there will be a cheaper alternative in the future.

I'll have to try without the cruise on the hwy and see what happens with my idle.
I don't think it's the apps...I changed mine about a year ago (dead pedal, etc. symtoms) and it didn't really affect this jump in idle speed. iat is also new within about 6-8 months.
This higher idle doesn't seem to affect anything, but it would be nice to make sure it isn't a sign of something worse.

Well been driving all week without using cruise control and haven't had the problem yet. So what do you guys think it is? Still think the apps would fix the problem? There is no codes still and no other symtoms just high idle after cruise control.

I was uncertain what to do before I changed my APPS. With my luck I new if I changed the APPS it would be the ECM or worse yet the vp44. I understand your predicament especially after reading clarson80's post.
I lived with my problem for 4 years. The higher idle was a nuisance that I could live with. The dead pedal was only the odd time. I was returing on a 3000 mile trip that I had about 6 dead pedal incidents on the last day when I knew I had to do something.
The high idle started while under warranty. I took it in to the dealership to check with their scanner and they could not find a code or reproduce the problem. They charged me for the shop time. I asked why the charge it is under warranty? The service writer said if they could not find a fault they charged the customer even if it was under warranty. I said in other words you are calling me a liar. A little discussion ensued about integrity! That is the last time my truck has seen the inside of that shop!!!
Good luck on your decision and let us know what you decide to do.

Has anyone nailed down the culprit to the high idle problem?

I just started experiencing the same issues over the weekend. Here's what happened:

I had to make a 260 mile trip form North Austin to Corsicana (almost all highway driving). I left at 4:30a with the air temp in the low 50's. Hit I35 N and set the cruise. I get to Waco (about halfway to destination) and pull off for something to drink. At this point, I noticed my truck idling high around 1000 RPMs. I killed the truck and checked the codes. No codes. I purchased my drink, started the truck and it's now idling fine. I pulled back on the highway and set the cruise. When I got to Corsicana and got stopped at a light, I noticed it was idling high again. I killed the engine and re-started. It's idling fine again. When I got ready to return home, the air temp was in the low to mid 70s. I suspected the cruise control had something to do with it, so I used my foot until I got halfway home (Waco). At this point, the truck is idling fine. The rest of the way home, I used the cruise and was surprised when I got back to N Austin that the truck was still idling normally.

Is the APPS the definate problem?

csrosenberry, set your pulse to monitor TPS and see if it goes to 0% when the idle is abnormally high.

I would try a reset, or adjustment of the APPS/TPS before I spent the coin on a new one.

Well big blue I still have the issue desrcibed in the posts above from a while back. I will look into how to do the reset/adjustment unless you can help me. And I have the adrenaline but I don't have the pulse yet waiting for the release of that one. But when I do have it in the truck I will try to get in contact with you again and see what she reads. Thanks

Let us know what helps......

This is exactly why I don't use the Cruise! I hate ABS, Cruise.....Let me drive the truck.... Sorry
