Hy35 To Hx35??

what modifications, if any, need to be done to convert from an HY to an HX?? would the mods be the same if swithching to an HX40? other than the downpipe? i haven't messed with turbo's much, so i'm a little lacking in that area.

I just did this. Bolted right in in my case. The HX35W I used has the wastegate actuator pointing downward, compared to the wastegate can and rod on my HY pointing toward the radiator. Also, the HY had two studs threaded into the mounting flange, with the other two studs mounted in the exhaust manifold. The HX had four clean holes, so I had to buy two new metric bolts to mount it to the engine. I bought all new gaskets and o-rings from the Cummins Central Power store in Cedar Rapids one night while traveling. I reused the top oil line connection from the HY, and it was a chore to scrape the old gasket material off of the oil drain flange!!

Also: The HX turbo outlet is a short castiron flanged nipple, that attaches to a castiron elbow with a v-band clamp (which I also bought from Cummins). This elbo has the threaded castiron ears that the downpipe clamp attaches to. If you get an HX35 turbo, be sure you get that elbo, or else you will have to remove the HY35 turbo back plate (5 bolts) and re-use it on the HX35. It will bolt up fine, but I have been told the HX setup is actually better somehow. The thin sheetmetal gasket for the back plate is also available from Cummins, but I think it comes in a rebuild kit.

I have noticed a drop in EGT's when playing with my Xzillaraider module, and spoolup is still pretty quick. I can actually lay a small cloud of smoke now (I haven't tried fogging the neighborhood yet, since I have a stock 47RE to think about) when I do a low boost romp with the module set on 2 or 3, where as the HY would flash really fast to 35 psi. I do not have a boost elbow yet.

Hope this helps! PM me if you have any questions!!

I was also surprised that the HY35 had an open inlet plenum, instead of divided like the manifold outlet. Probably due to the very small exhaust housing. The difference between the two turbos by size is pretty incredible, when you think they were used for similar applications.
