HX35/40 Hybrid Durability!!!!!!!
Look what I did...HX35/40 Carnage
Lasted 15 minutes running @ 1500RPM, then almost 3 miles driving
If you cant tell, the exhaust wheel is MIA, and everything after the exhaust housing flange is broken off!
When it let go, boost was 40.6psi @ 1486* (hadn't even turned the valet off yet)
Any ideas what would cause this on a nearly new turbo??
Just thought I'd share...this turbo is junk now

dang buddy!!!!! that one definatly exploded didn't it!!!! that's a first for me, don't think I've ever seen one first hand that flew apart like that??? wasn't that one of HTT's hybrid's?? if so you may give them a shout & show them the pics see what their thoughts are on why it let go? so did you go ahead & buy the 98' ???? can't wait to see what you do with a truck that you don't actually have to use!!! good luck with the new ride, Dusty

Don't take it that way...lots of those turbos are on the road, most for a long time!! This turbo had something else wrong with it Most 35's, even with 40 wheels, are really durable...moreso than HX40's most of the time!!
Dusty, I'm not sure if this is one of HTT's or not. I might call them and see if there is anyway to tell. I'm not really looking for someone to eat this one! I've had it for a while, I've just never used it 'till now! I might send it off to see if there are any good parts left though!!

I figured you'd take the hit for it, just thought they may be able to shed some light on the cause???? I highly doubt the fact that it's got a 40 comp wheel caused that, I beat the crap outta my dodgezilla hybrid & man that thing is still out there spinnin up a storm today, I'd have to say your problems were from more than it just being a "hybrid", like you said there are a boatload of trouble free hybrids out there being pushed alot farther than yours got pushed!! hate it got all busted up though, would have looked nice under the hood of this old overvalved pile of mine!!!!! LOL

Im not pointing any fingers. I dont know who built the turbo, but I did talk to someone at HTT about this same thing, and they have seen this happen before. He didnt recommend it unless your just mildly fueled.

Yep!! I forgot, but remembered I needed a new crush washer in it, so I took the line off, new washer, and oil!! Then I forgot the manifold gasket, so I had to take it back off again. Been a long time since I changed turbos...I was rusty
Either way, lack of oil would cause a failure, but not an explosion like that, IMHO. It blew the casting apart!

Chris, Was this in your twin set up? wastegated or no?
First thing I had come to mind (because it happened within 15 min of first start up) was not tightened housing after clocking?? Does not sound like you, but...have seen it before.

Nope, took the twins off! Put it on there Non-W/G for the time being. I have an ATS with Piers gate on it, but forgot I needed special bolts to put it on
I'm sure the Drive pressure was high at 40psi boost, but it only lasted 3 miles. Most of those were at less than 20psi. I still say it was a junk
Couldn't have been my fault...I'm not hard on stuff

I see you edited your post...I didn't have to clock the housing, just the compressor housing snap ring job Thought about that too, but the bolts were tight when I took it apart

I smoked two HX 35 Hybrids.
They don't like anything over 38 psi.
My first one blew the turbine wheel out the tail pipe. (hx40/35 w/ non w/g 14cm housing)
The second one let the engine eat the comp wheel (hx40/35 w/ w/g 14 cm housing)
Just be thankful that the wheel went out instead of in
Shat overspeed will kill them in a second!
