Need some help with this subject, From my understanding my 2002 HO has a HY35 Turbo. Can I put a HX35 turbo on instead ?? From what I understand the HY spools up faster but doesn't maintain boost if your not stepping on it. The HX35 takes a little longer to spool up but will maintain boost pressure longer. Does this make sense or am I just way off base. The reason I'm asking is I'm looking at putting DD2 injectors with a comp box in my unit but I have been told that the turbo will not be able to provide enough boost pressure to complete the power. I think I reaaalllly need help here. Your replies would be greatly appreciated.

I think I heard that the Hx35 gives a better top end but is a lil slower at spool up. If you going with DD2's and a comp. and you thinking of changing your turbo I would go with a PDRHx40 or similar.

Thanks, problem is I don't have enough in the sock drawer for a new turbo right now, but I have a friend who has a HX I can try out to see if it will work alittle better. I ordered a Wildcat Maxflow Kit the other day and I'm going to do that before I do anything else. Also got hit by the taxman so One step at a time.

Your 2002 HO 6 sp came with a HX 35 from the factory.

The SO with auto trans came with the HY turbo and had a 9 cm turbine housing.The HX turbo has a 12 cm housing

Thanks , I'm still confused I need help, Maybe medically . But someone tell me is my HO turbo a HY????? or a HX???? How do I tell????? Ok I guess I have to get off my butt and check the Name plate.

You have an HX35 with a 12cm housing. The standard trucks have the HX the autos have the HY. Dodge didn't mate the HO with the auto so all Ho's have the HX in stock form. The quickest way to tell is the HX has a rubber hose connected to the waste gate actuator, the HY has a solid pipe (aka hard line). The HY also uses a band clamp to connect the exhaust housing to the bearing cartridge, the HX bolts together. With the HX you can upgrade to a larger housing, with the HY you can't. HTH

Thanks, MLR1 i was mixed up with this issue, so which is a better turbo???What type of turbo is on the 98.5 24V?? The reason is that a friend of mine has one laying around and I was wondering if it would be worth the effort.

98.5 24v has the Hx35

The 98.5 would have a HX turbo If It had a standard trans.If It has a auto trans It would have a HY turbo.You do not want to use the HY If want to add mods you will want to modify your HX or go with a larger turbo the HY 9 Is to small.Hope this helps

I heard that all the SO from 98.5 till like 2000 had the Hx35 no matter what. Am I wrong?

No. Your right. Dodge didn't start putting the HY's on the auto till 2000.

Believe the smaller HY-35 was added to Autos to satisfy the EPA by controlling smoke & emissions with faster spoolup.

Stonewall - Smaller turbo (HY-35) runs out of usable cool air on the top end more quickly than yours. If you will be adding any mods (injectors, box) you will be glad to have the HX-35, up to about 350 hp. Turbos are a balancing act; better low end performance means less usable (cool) high end air - and vice versa.

Adding DD2's & the Comp Box with your turbo will give you higher EGT's but will work ok. You will need to monitor gauges so you know when to back off the throttle when it gets too hot. Try it first to see how you like it. HX-35 will give you usable air up to about 34 psi boost. Above that your over reving the turbo and over heating the air. IMHO.
