HP Limits on a nv4500
Had probs out of my 5spd this year, first I blew the input shaft, so I upgraded to the 1 3/8 shaft, then I blew 3rd gear, got it rebuilt, then 5th gear, not the nut comming off, 5th gear ground both teeth complety off.
It will be done tues, but I don't know if I should even bother puttin the tranny back in.
What will these trannys actually hold, I don't think I have enough power to be breakin the tranny like this, but at this point I don't know what to do.
$$$ is definitly a factor, (being i'm tapped out frpm prior breakdowns)
So what should I do at this point, should the tranny be holdin up and have I just had bad luck, or am I actually pushin the limits of the tranny.
Any suggestion
Bryan

It shouldn't be too much of a surprise that you're inducing more load with extra HP. However, I didn't see any disabling problems in the 18+ months at 650HP. The nv4500 never quit and never had any upgrades (it did run amsoil gear oil instead of the syntorq). It did seem a bit more sloppy after 18 months, but nothing that would prevent it from functioning. I bought the truck with 155k on it and sold it with 188k. The new owner is happy with the trans and reports no problems.

if you could swing it I'd just toss the 5 spd, I've got a 6spd. sittin in the floor under my truck right now, gotta finish her up tomorrow, I had reocurring problems with my 5 spd. just seemed like it was gettin worse long before it was ever gonna get better, so I'm throwin in a 6 spd. & a south bend DD clutch & hopefully that will take care of my tranny troubles for a long time, it seems like if u have a 5 spd. they're ok until they break, then they're just a pain from then on ( just my personal experience anyway ) but if you do much pulling/towing at all I'd seriously consider the 6 spd., Dusty

I broke the input shaft on the 4500 pulling. I wasn t even loaded, just a 10 k lb trailer, slight grade and around 1000 ft lbs. Actually it was running right about 1900 rpm part throttle. I converted to a 5600.

I ve had my 5600 for afew years now, trouble free. It was used, and I ussually tow 25500. My truck was making 600/1190. Im doing things to it now, and expect 700/1300 atleast. I do take it easy on teh trans, try to shift smooth, I dont race it either. I have fun with it, but the trans swap was 3000$ so I try to balance having fun with a vette, vrs.....picking up parts. So far its had alot of fun with vettes and such, vrs any problems.
