How to prolong the life of a LP?

I wantin to know what are some of the ways yal are tryin to prolong the life of a lift pump. I know runnin the warnin light and FP gauage will tell you when it goes out but I want somethin that help it live longer. I know you can add a Holley blue pump, but I not sure how that works or where u put it. Also when runnin the blue pump would I need to run bigger banjo fittins and larger fuel lines or is that just somethin extra??

Since I'm new i"ll give yal a littte back ground. I don't own a CTD yet,(done sold my big chevy and I'm lookin) but I've been around them my most of my life. My cousin had a 01 CTD 2500 5 speed untill about the first of the year with a edge comp but it ate the lp down in decatur at thompson CAT one day. We were late so we drove back on the VP ( will u know what that does) so he traded it in on a 06 stroke. My buddy had a 99 CTD 2500 5 speed with edge EZ stacked with TST powermax 3 with catcher and it ran great. With no more than the 2 boxs, 4 inch, exhuast and KN cold air intake that truck would fly, (one the fated trucks I've rode in without injectors) till it started blown fuel back out of the injectors and leakin from the HG and the the clutch was slippin on anything about levek 5 (but it was factory clutch with 155K on it) and now he has a Dmax but it lookin for another CTD.Another friend just got a 99 2500 5 speed with 63K on it last friday and he is wantin some more power so right now me and johnthan ( the friend with the 99) are helpin him and kinda testin some waters with this truck and see what works.

Thanks

A vulcan big line kit will add life by increasing flow and less restiction, which should make it easier on the pump. thus increasing life of the LP

Another vote for the Vulcan kit here too.

Your buddies luck with their CTD's seem to be self inflicted. Driving with a known dead lift pump is asking for VP failure, and those mods on your other buddies truck are known to slip a stock clutch too.

About the only way to prolong the life of a stock LP is to remove it from your truck and put it on a shelf. They are junk.

Install a FASS II and forget about LP problems. They are warrantied for 4 years, 400K miles.

lift pump upgrade

Dodge dealers (and I assume others) have an upgrade for the lift pump. The new style lift pump is in the tank and pushes fuel up the line, just had it installed with my latest, new injector pump (this is the second time I've had an injector pump go after loosing a lift pump). The dealer says this new style set up will last forever (yeah, what else would you expect him to say, only time will tell). Anyway, if it even lasts just twice as long, it's worth it, injector pumps are expensive.

The in the tank versions are no good either, and the are a pain to replace. Sorry.

You can get a fuel pressure guage setup for under 100 dollars to keep the odds in your favor about losing a VP due to lift pump failure.

if you really feel the need to keep the stock LP, run a big fuel line kit, and a good additive...thats all i can suggest.

Thumbs up

I moved my pump away from the engine, keep the fuel tank at least half full or better, always use a fuel treatment and pump in fuel at the lowest setting on the handle to let the fuel station despenser filters do their job and reduce the chance of picking up any water.

I too have the Vulcan kit. I'm thinking that just moving off of the vibration and heat of the block/enine compartment could be a good thing.

Geico is probably right, the real end all solution is to scrap it for a more reliable set up.

I pour in a quart of regular motor oil with every fill up. Nothing special, what ever is on sale. It seems to be helping and it's cheap.

Experience talking here guys. I messed around with stock LP's for 6 years. Replaced 4 of them. I've taken them apart, looked at them very carefully, and IMHO they are just too lite duty and fragile. Take one apart and you will see what I mean, or trust me they are junk.

Stop pretending to fix the LP problem and get a FASS II and CURE it. My FP guage never moves from 15 PSI. Do yourselves (and your VP-44) a favor and replace the stock LP once and for all.

The Walbro kit is around $350 and is unproven right now with a one year warranty. The FASS II has a 4 year / 400K mile warranty for $380. You do the math.

Alright the vulcan kits is a help not a cure and the FASS II is a fix or close to it. 380 ant bad cause they told my cuz it would be about 2600 pump and install and thats why he has the stroke. Our local diesel guy (Rockin P diesels) has been movin the pumps around on a few trucks but not enough to see if its a big difference. I really don't care for his work so I called Dixie Diesel in columba,tn and they said they have some luck with that mod but it still a toss up. They said a gauge and watch it or the FASS.

Yeah those factory clutchs didn't like that extra power but we knew they wouldn't last but it was fun till u shifted into 3rd and all it would do was rev up.
