how much will as stock auto tranny take?
Pretty new with the modifiying of diesels, this is my second one and i have started toying around with this one. My question is will a stock automatic tranny in a 2001 handle 275 injectors and a diablo power puck?? If not what kind of mods would i have to make to the tranny and what would this cost approx? How much smoke would a set up like this produce? I am open to all suggestions and enjoy reading your replies.

Rumor has it the stock trans is only good up to about 250/650. My guess is you'd be quite a bit over that with the 275's and puck. Sorry, I'm a 12v guy, don't pay much attention to what's going on with the overvalved motors.
Do a search on transmissions (grab a comfy chair) and you'll get a pretty good idea of what you need to do. Best bet is a replacement trans, cost is anywhere from $3K to 5K, depending on who you go with.
Good luck with your mods.....

I have a 01, with auto, I started out with 275's. loved them, but did not want to go higher. The auto is a tricky thing, some are stronger than others.. I waited till I had the funds for an ATS trany then went with some bigger injectors and turbo... best thing I ever did. Love the ride. did not want tobreak down any where with to much power to the trany. Good luck

I have an 01 with an ez and 275s. My atuo has 99850 miles on it so far and still works fine(where is that wood). However I have driven it with care, dont race and have never hauled anything that I would call heavy. A fair amount of stuff in the 3-5k range but thats it. In fact I am looking at getting a 5th wheel and the trans is in the budget calculations not willing to chance it any more if I am going to be pulling 10-12k.

Hope this helps. I have an '01 with and edge comp. I get in it quite a bit, but I don't tow and don't haul anything too heavy. I've had it on there for 15K and run on 5X5. The transmission still shifts as firm as it did the day I bought it. I think it just depends on how you treat your truck. Just my 2 rounds!

Hello CTD2001 and welcome to the site. The first thing you want to get is gauges. Towing with your upgrades will raise the EGTs fast (don’t want to get above 1300 degf for long). And after a long pull you will want to let the EGTs get below 300 degf pre turbo before shutting down.
I’m close to your setup. I upgraded the tranny to a Suncoast unit in Jan and I’ve been satisfied with its performance. I tow in overdrive with no problems. I was getting about 13.2 mpg with winter blend fuel pulling an 8080 lb 5th wheel. I’ve just installed the EDM Mach 1.5s with in the week so I don’t know how that will hit the mileage. I do like the power they make.
I upgraded the tranny because of the way it was shifting. I wanted it to shift lower in the power curve. That is where the low speed torque converter will help. The valve body will takes care of the rest. If you tow I would look at getting the whole tranny upgraded so you get new clutches and bands. The new bands in my Suncoast make the stock ones look like toys. You can find info here: http://www.suncoastconverters.com/dodge/tranns.htm
Some of the other guys to look at:

Hope this helps.

Lots of good info here, i think that gauges is the next step, the more and more i read, everyone says that they are the first thing to do. I do not do much haulin, snowmobile trailer that is light as a feather, (can pull it with a stock Ford Danger Ranger) and a 19ft boat which is light too. With upgrading the tranny, my only concern is that i live in maine, all of these tranny shops seems to be located a good distance away, i dont mind a nice cruz, but is this upgrade to the tranny something that i can send away for parts and have it done at a local shop? Ie, cummins dealer, dodge dealer?? This site is awesome, very addicting, spend hours on here everynight after work, the old lady is not impressed though, HEHE. Thanks

Most of the shops I've listed will work with other shops or have a rep near you. Just go to their site and e-mail them or give them a call. I've called all of them when I was shopping for mine and they all will give you good advice if you know what you want. If you are good with a tranny you can do the install yourself.
I went with the shop to be sure the job was done right (like putting the resistor on pin 29 of the PCM), and of course the warranty.
Let the wife know we won't take you away, and at least you are home on the computer and not out getting in trouble. And on the flip side always remember, family first.
Good luck with your search.

all i can say is that i have put over 300hp on the stocker auto with upped line pressures for over 50k (hp varying). it's held....and it will hold if you drive it right, but you'll always have to think about rpm vs. tq vs. throttle position (tranny line pressure) etc. so as not to slip it while going down the road. when i had my stock pump and stock timing i could easily slip the converter clutch with just the snowmobile trailer on back.
i, however, don't recommend putting this power through it and i do highly recommend DTT.
btw, where are you from in Maine?...starting to see a few people from ME and NH now so that's cool.
also, there's dyno day and cookout at dez's again on May 15th in Mass if you'd like to go; i'll be taking the drive down myself. also, talk to Scott of Mass Diesel. he installs DTT's--highly recommend him, and i'm sure a couple members would let you drive their DTT'd trucks if you get to one of the meetings.
