How much smoke should my new Edge EZ make?

How much smoke should my new Edge EZ make?
Installed my new Edge EZ a few days ago and I like it so far.

The one thing I am curious about is the amount of smoke I produce now. Before adding the EZ, I couldn't get more than a faint whisper of smoke under any conditions. Now, I get a good cloud of smoke at every gear unless I am super light on the throttle.

This isn't necessarily a problem. I just wondered if it was normal. I was quite surprised by it. If I am driving in 5th gear at mid RPMs (1500 -1800), I can barely press the throttle and instantly see smoke start rolling.

Just wondered what others had experienced.

Thanks!

Re:How much smoke should my new Edge EZ make?
Just put my EZ on a couple of months ago. The only time I get any smoke is when I get on it from a dead stop. Then I get a pretty good black cloud, but not for long. Once the turbo spools up, the smoke disappears. I have an auto, so I don't know about gear changes. If I drive "normally," I get no smoke at all. As you can see in my sig, I have a 99, with the EZ and mild injectors.

My truck is pretty much the same as yours. I get black smoke after shifting gears and getting on the gas, but I don't get any noticable smoke in 5th, maybe a little with it floored.

I only get smoke when I'm running hard or pulling a load. Normal operation, no smoke....but than again, what is normal operation... :P
Big dawg

I get no smoke to really speak of out of mine. Are you running the boost elbow? I was going to also add that maybe the pin is in another spot than #1 but it looks like other guys do the same thing. I dont know. Call Edge.

Re:How much smoke should my new Edge EZ make?
The sticks will get more smoke than the autos will because when they shift gears, boost is lost. when autos shift, boost stays high. If you set the pin to 1 or 2, you won't get low boost fueling, hence less smoke when you shift gears with a stick.

Mike

I have my EZ set at the most aggressive setting, and my 02 will only smoke if I tromp on it at VERY low RPM in 6th. My truck will only smoke in a lugging type of situation.

I cannot see smoke under any conditions in 4th gear or lower.

I am using the boost elbow.

I would imagine that the DD2s will smoke a little more than i am now :-[ :-[ :-[

Hohn

Thanks for all the feedback.

I thought myself that the manual tranny probably has something to do with it. I am at 0 lbs. boost after every shift.

I did install the boost elbow, but I don't think that has anything to do with it since this is a low boost condition. On a side note, I can say that the elbow does its job. I could not exceed 20 lbs. before adding the elbow. The gauge consistently stopped at 19 to 20 lbs of boost. On my first test drive, I hit 25 lbs. and felt like I could have gotten a little more.

I think I will call Edge just to get their feedback on it. I may try to see if I can read the numbers on my injectors also. I almost wonder if the previous owner didn't install a moderate set of injectors on this truck.

The smoke I am getting right now is fairly impressive (at least to me). I noticed that every Ford or Chevy I drove by this weekend earned a good long stare from the driver. 8)

It would be cool if they could tell you a whire to cut or unplug that gave you massive amounts of smoke. Then just maybe my 98 will out smoke my 94 :
DM01

I am running the Edge EZ on my 1999 pickup with automatic. The Edge is always left on level 3. I noticed it hazes a decent amount of brown smoke accelerating onto the on ramp. I also have DDP stage 1 injectors (50hp). Towing anything, even an empty 5'x10' cargo trailer will make it smoke/haze a lot. I don't really like the excess smoke to be honest, it turns the corner of my bumper black on a road trip and makes me look like an A-hole to the cars behind me on a hill. I like clean power with just a slight haze. After my last tow excursion, I decided to turn down my Edge-EZ to setting #2.........maybe that's more manageable for smoke control when towing.
Between the Edge-EZ and my DDP1 injectors, perhaps the stock HX-35 is maxed out on how much air it can provide for the setup?
