How much fuel pressure is too much?

zulu,

Can you explain how placing your fuel pressure gauge before the filter aids you in monitoring filter life? I think you have your lines seriously crossed.
Bosch wants to limit pressure to 14psi, hence the internal bypass in the VP44. But the pump has been tested reliable up to 40psi a long time ago.

IIRC, max hp came at 28psi or so, but I could be wrong. It was in an old Don M post.

A 150 GPH pump rated to 50 psi will either:
a) stall, because it will not be able to push 150 GPH through the fuel system, or
b) build up more pressure than 50 psi and damage the IP.
A bypass is necessary if a pump of this capacity is used.
Bosch VP44, 14 psi ball valve on the drain line has nothing to do with pressure regulation. It is a check valve, not a pressure relief valve, according to FSM
I had a writeup a while ago about the flows you get through the stock fuel system: https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=138789

Anybody know this or have an opinion???

I have read threads where people have done this. Some had good success, others said the pressures weren't good. Someone also ran the two in parallel, and they got very stable idle / WOT pressures just at about perfect value (17 psi IIRC).

A carter 4601hp and a vulcan big line kit will get you all the fuel you need. I was getting 16 at idle and 11-12 at wot with that setup.
